UPC Fibre Bundle -Non HDMi box

My parents got the UPC Fibre bundle installed last week and were telling me over the phone how poor the image quality was. I figured the resolution on the box might have been set wrong, but yesterday I discovered that UPC had installed a scart only box.

The "Basic" bundle might not include any HD channels, but not providing an HDMi enabled box when everyone has a HD tv means the image quality is awful. They have also had problems with channels they pay for (TV3 etc) not been accessible from time to time.

I'm going to ring UPC tomorrow to try and get a decent set top box, I'm just wondering anyone else is in the same position and if so did UPC help at all?

If they set the menu option to 'RGB 'then there should be no difference between a non-HD channel viewed through a SCART cable or HDMI. UPC didn't offer HD in my area up to a few months ago, up to then I had a full HD TV connected to a non-HD UPC box via SCART cable, the picture quality was superb though obviously not HD and I have noticed no difference with the non-HD channels since I went HD and got a new box which uses a HDMI cable.

Picture quality varies considerably across all of the UPC channels, UTV is particular is terrible and obviously a lot of the channels that run repeats will be not as good as BBC and other channels showing modern programs.

If your parents are not gong to pay for HD channels then I can't see UPC caving in and giving them a box they don't need and which based on my experience will not improve the picture quality. Non-HD is non-HD, regardless of whether a SCART cable or HDMI carries it from the decoder to your TV. Check the video option on the menus and set it to 'RGB'.

Cheers for the advice coylemj, I'll have a look at the settings for 'RGB' so.

BTW, I believe RTE2 and the BBC1 & 2 HD channels are free provided you have a HD box so I suggest your parents tell UPC they're upgrading to a new TV which has HDMI only (no SCART) and they want a box with a HDMI connector, see what happens. There is a possibility they will get a non-HD box with a HDMI connector but they might be lucky and get a HD decoder in which case they should get the free HD channels.

Open to correction on this. Only caveat is that there will be a lot of non-HD boxes coming back after Horizon upgrades which probably means they will get an older non-HD box.

    Do scartless tv models exist?
