Sell me a Surface Pro 2

    Hello All,

Hoping some of you can help me on a difficult decision. Looking to get a new toy for Christmas and toss up between Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and a Macbook Pro 8GB/256GB model.

I have never owned a Macbook, nor any Apple based laptop etc. Have a nice Windows 8 ultrabook (Dell XPS 12) and iPad etc, use a Galaxy Note 3 as mobile and wife on iPhone5 so figuring time I maybe looked at a Macbook.

Primarily it will be used at home for browsing and some app's my wife uses for craft making but I will be using a VPN into work from it too on odd occasion.

Anyway, can anyone sway me towards the Surface Pro as thinking just getting "another" Windows device is daft..

Looked at them in PC World and really liked them so would really like to hear from anyone with a Surface Pro 2, or that had similar decision to make.

Entered reverse question in Apple forum BTW:confused:

Thanks for any help, really appreciate.

    Paddy

    I love mine,

but do you have a specific need or want out of the pro features? The tablet form factor? The digitizer pen? I use mine for taking notes.

You're in the strangest possible place with 3 incongruent OS's (Windows, Android, iOS). Pick one and slag it. Maybe give the iPad to your wife?

The XPS 12 does a lot of what the Pro does already, sans the pen. What is pushing you to this purchase? Impulse?

That sum's it all up :D

Wife can use iPad as much as she wishes. Just like nice tech and good portability, with power. Would need to go for Pro as I want full Windows 8.1 Vs RT.

Would never be bothered slagging off one piece of tech over the other but from what I have seen online plenty of this goes on. I am just following the impulse..

Going to go look at the Surface Pro and Macbook Pro again in PC World this evening and will see from that.

    Thanks for your help.

I'd suggest that there are better alternatives to the Surface Pro 2 from other manufacturers such as the DELL XPS 12 (though I found it to be very heavy and awkward after testing one here for a month) or maybe their new Venue 11 Pro (which you can spec in Atom or i5+ form).

Ah but the XPS 12 can be an Ultrabook OR a convertible :)

The Lenovo Yoga machines are pretty good too.

what price is the Surface 2 ?

i know the 64GB Rt (1st Gen) is on sale up north for £339 with the touch keyboard.

if money is an issue i would opt for the 1st gen.

    Surface 2 has 3.0 USB
    1080 HD
    another setting on kickstand
    tegra 4 processor

    i could live without that.

    personally my choice would be

Surface RT for £249 with £25 Windows store credit.

id hold out for a 2nd hand or generic type cover

for me the original surface is a bargain at these prices and i cant see it dropping much more.

Have you looked at the 8" windows tablets ? They only have atom processors (although they aren't as brutal as before), but they are cheap, you can get a 32gb for around 300 euros. The surface weights 900g, which to me seems far too heavy for a tablet factor, the 8" tablets come in at around 450g, still big for the size but very manageable.
