Hi. My father in law made a mistake a few years back when purchasing up the North. He was attempting to get a FreeSat box that would work down here too. He said at the time that he ended up with something that would only work in the North - I'm assuming its a Freeview DTT box. Its been in its box unused since - but I'm just wondering could it be used as a Saorview box? It's not Saorview branded obviously - but I'd imagine it works on pretty similar standards, and will pick up RTE etc in the South?

    thanks

Do you mean Freesat or Freeview? Freeview HD kit almost certainly works, Freeview kit might only get sound.

It's pretty likely that you imagine wrong!!!

    What model box is it?

Going on the "few years back" comment, it's unlikely to be Freeview HD.

Definitely not Freesat, as that would have worked down here.
Probably Freeview, but doubt its Freeview HD as it was bought about 4 or 5 years ago and I think it was a fairly cheap one.

So, a cheap Freeview box from 4 years ago won't work on Saorview?
Don't know the make/model at the moment.

A cheap Freeview STB purchased now may not even work with Saorview, most don't have the required MPEG-4 video decoder for Saorview. Post the make and model no. and someone here will know for sure.

Virtually no Freeview box works on Saorview. Most but not all Freeview HD boxes work. If bought four or five years ago it was probably not a Freeview HD box.

Worth £5 to £10 in N.I., worth nothing here.

A Freestat box should work, if connected to a satellite dish, which is a different setup than required for Saorview.

Yeah I know thanks - it was freesat he meant to buy in the first place, and he has one now working fine. The query was about a Freeview box working on Saorview
