lab pup

Well men. As some of you may remember my first gundog (ess bitch) had to be put down at only a year old a few months ago and since then ive been thinking about getting back into it and getting another pup and after a couple of trys at getting a pup that didnt work out for various reasons i took the plunge tonight and bought a black lab bitch, but heres the catch she isnt from hunting stock well her mother is apparently from hunting lines in wicklow but neither parents are hunted so my question is what are the chances she will turn out to be a gundog ?? I know theres less chance of a dog turning out good if its parents werent hunted but id like to hear yer views anyway thanks. And i know i probably should have asked this question yesterday before i bought the pup but f**k it i said id take a chance haha

Lad there no reason in the world one you put the time in that she won't be a gud dog .

She could be a smasher or disaster .

Only concerns I would have is that the nose might not be as gud . But sure ya won't know till ya start hunting her .

If ya don't mind me asking how much you forked out , and why not from hunting lines

Yea thats what i was thinking and beleive me i have nothing but time so that wont be a problem. And she was only 95€ so its not a huge loss if it doesnt work out ill have a nice pet anyway ha and i didnt have the money for a lab pup from hunting lines and i wasnt really interested in another springer

Lad you have nothing to loose , I was a afraid u had giving 300 or so for a pup that's all I've a mate give 50 euro for a lab against my advice . And I've personally ate my words , and we have shot hundreds of duck over her in 9 years now

Its all a game of chance I have seen pups ESS out of FTC on both sides an you wouldn't give a fiver for them I always maintain you get back what you put in you have a pup at the right time of year come June July will be a great age for getting used to water. Hope all goes well this time around it a bollix to loose a young dog

THIS IS BAILEY MY 8 YEAR OLD GOLDEN RETRIEVER NO HUNTING LINES IN HIM BUT THIS LAD HAS SWAM THE SUIR FOR DUCK MORE TIMES THEN ANY DOG HE WILL BUST A DITCH OPEN IF THERES A PHESANT IN IT ITS ALL LUCK AND TIME SPENT WITH HIM I HOPE YOUR LUCKY WITH YOUR LAB BUT AT BTHE VERY LEAST HE SHOULD BE ABEL TO RETRIEVE BIRDS LIKE ALL PUPS MAKE IT A FUN GAME FOR HIM AND HE WONT BE LONG PICKING IT UP MOST DOGS WILL DO ANYTHING TO PLEASE YOU IF YOU HAVE A GOOD BOND WITH THEM

Thanks for the replies lads. I was thinking seeing as shes not from a hunting background would it be a good idea to get her out with the older springer every so often for a hunt (no gun obviously) while shes still young just to get her in the right mindset right from the start ?? And yea shes mad to retrieve a tennis ball or a pheasant wing every chance she get already so if she doesnt work out as a full on gundog ill give it a go at turning er into a picking up dog for the pigeon hide and the likes
