Lads moving to Spain in the summer for erasmus next year. i have to decide on the college over the next week or so and rugby is something i would like to keep up while there.

I have options as to colleges all over Spain but the ones that tickle my fancy at the moment are Victoria Gasteiz near Bilbao (45 mins drive) and Murcia.

My question is this. Does anyone know of rugby active rugby teams in or close to these areas? active teams that play in leagues?

Cheers lads all help appreciated and will help me decide on college hopefully.

Just from looking at the locations of the teams in the División de Honor and from what I've heard of the popularity of the game in Spain, rugby is at its most popular in the north. Particularly in the Basque Country and to a lesser extent in Galicia and Asturias. So Bilbao would be a safe bet I reckon. Sure you'd find clubs in the majority of the larger cities too.

EDIT: Sorry missed the Murica part. I'm sure there's a club somewhere in the city that you could play for, but given the city's geographic location I doubt that rugby is all that popular there.

A friend of mine played when he was in madrid for a club, I would guess that there are teams in most well populated areas

thanks lads, i have lived in torrevieja before (alicante) and while there was a rugby team it was just a drinking team once every month or so they would meet up play against each other and drink to a stupor.
north spain is probably my best bet so!

The University of Valladolid apparently is quite big in the Spanish rugby. Somebody told me that they have six different divisions playing. Valladolid RAC have competed in the Amlin Challenge.

The top clubs in the Basque country are: Ordizia, Getxo, Gernika and Hernani, all in the División de Honor, the top division. In Vallodolid the two top clubs are VRAC and El Salvador, in Madrid: Atlético (Canoe) and Cisneros, where I train one of the kids' teams. Standard obviously a lot lower here in Spain and clubs would be keen for someone from Ireland playing, especially if you've played at a decent level. Good luck!!!
