Hi guys , first time poster but long time viewer, just looking for a bit of advice, i currently own 110 acres, i am thinking about plantin around 17 acres of high-ish ground which is currently covered in rishes and fir bushes, i also have 22 acres next to this which is mountain grass and heather which i would love to plant but from what i understand this type of land can only make up 20% of your submission, but anyway i was wondering would it be a viable option to plant the land in order to buy better quality land, has anybody done this before, and also i was speaking to sombody who has a forestry and he said he got a lump sum up front ( a number of years a go) is this gone now? is it just the annual premiums i would get?

    thanks in advance

You will have to do some reading I'm afraid.

Check the Teagasc website here http://www.teagasc.ie/forestry/docs/index_downloads.asp
    and here

    http://www.teagasc.ie/forestry/docs/grants/ForestrySchemeOptions0908.pdf
lots of time over the Christmas no telly and lots of reading material,
    Regards,

No still in place for every 10 hectares 2 of that can be unenclosed land

Forest service will be able to advise you further or give a private afforestation company a ring SWS for example (I work for them on and off) just to make sure

Don't underestimate the value of forestry

20- 30 k a hectare at clear fell gross income before harvest costs Yada yada yada

Consider planting older whips, which will reduce the need for spraying to eliminate competition.
Be careful of the 'middle-man' (forestry companies who will maintain the stands for you, will end up getting a nice portion of money for doing so)
