Was milking this pm and a spring calver due to be dried of soon has a split vertically all the way up her teat.
I didnt milk her tonight because she looked sore, all the milk spilled onto the ground when she let it down though.

What do i do with her???

i dont want her getting mastitis but as soon as i touched her she went kicking

We had one cleaned the teat off when getting up, slanted cut flush with teat at one end and about 1/2 inch at other end. Put her into parlor and gave her nuts milk started like a tap had just opened then blood and lots of it but it eventually stopped. Anyway a few days later we started milking it again and it had healed up very well some months later. Milk starts coming just after giving nuts.
My only concern is she will be dried in 2 weeks but how do you tube a cow with no teat.

Ye thats my problem im going to dry another batch on monday and she could be one due to be dried, but how can i dry her with a split teat.

Wonder would she dry up herself if i left her on just straw for a few days?

Out to the field with her. Her chances of picking up a life threatening infection are very real.

Remove teat if it's not slit to the udder, you can do this yourself or if never done get vet to do it and watch him/her, it's simple with the righ tools

i couldnt get a proper look at her tonight because she was kicking too much but looks close enough to the udder.

Heard of lads putting a burdizzo oncows before alright but thats rough id say.

    be very careful removing teat,

heard of cows bleeding to death and there is no way of stopping it

    put her in the crush

tie up her leg and inspect it properly

start a course of penstrep or maybe noroclav

if you can try give her another 2-3 weeks before drying off to give it a chance to heal, if you do cut it off tie off the end with a bit of string for a few hours to give the blood a chance to clot.

we have one girl with half the teat cut off, no problems with mastitis or leaking, until she come into the parlour, then she just lets it all down, you could miss all the milk if you werent quick

You can get an external sealer from magenta. MHC barrier.
It might do my job after I get her dry cowed, we used it yrs ago it was a syrup like substance that u dip the teats with and I dries quickly to form a rubbery skin. Might help if you have to keep her in the shed.

I've afew cows with very short teat lengths, and leak non stop, I hadn't heard of that, but will definitely be picking up a bottle of it! http://www.magentadirect.ie/proddetail.php?prod=MDH0047&cat=13

TBH I didn't find this much good, maybe if you cleaned it off every second day and re applied , or if the animal was out the field maybe ok

i found in the cubicles it tended to flake and dry off.

it's awhile since i bought it , but it might be cheaper to buy directly from MHC

How does the vet go about doing it? Wat a lot of people would do here is put a rubber ring on like you were tailing a lamb and leave it on for a few days then cut, stops the blood flow.

If she's going dry the she's gone dry. Into the crush and tie her securely. Clean the wound totally. Wound powder or some other absorbent compound, some light lint and plenty of surgical tape. Start as high up close to the udder as you can esp. if some of the teat is undamaged. You'll want plenty of LA antibiotics for at least a week and out to the field until the wound is healed. I don't think she has a prayer indoors. I've seen them go both ways, at least iit didn't happen in the spring when you are up to your goolies in calving and calves, you have a bit more time to work on her at the mo'.

She came in in tge second row this am. Looked at her teat didnt look as bad as what i had first thought so put the cups on 3 of her teats and saud id milk her teat in the pm but she kicked off cluster and then the teat opened and let all the milk out.

Mixed up a stiff mix of kaolin powder, dapped it on her teat and put gauz on it. Have her in the field now. Ill see what shes like tonight

Chop the teat off. Good man on tail and use burdizzo to amputate teat. Amputate above where the cut is.

Chopping off a teat with a burdizzo. Sounds painful.
Think of the animal and get a vet.

No huge rush either, give it time to heal up some bit before going to the extreme of cutting it off. One she is off the cubicles thats the main thing.

I mean send the cow to the factory - thats a serious hassle and if it got badly infected you could loose all.

Not having much luck Jersey, there's a crowd in warrenpoint, county down do creams for cuts and scrapes, seems to work well enough, I'm sure there's plenty of others
