Another race gimmick

or two gimmicks in one, I guess
    http://www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com/en/about/#a-unique-format-74

First gimmick is that the race is run simultaneously in 40 countries, starting at 3am in California and 11am in Kerry.

Second is that it's a chase, not a race of a set distance. You get a 30 minute head start and have to stay ahead of a sweeper car which is constantly speeding up. So you have 70 minutes to reach the 10k mark, easy. 93 minutes to reach 10 miles, so the walkers are out. Half marathon in just under 2 hours. Marathon in 3.08. 50k in 3.36. 63k in 4.15. The car reaches 100k 5 hours 50 minutes after the race starts, so to stay ahead you'd have to be running 3.30/km

all for charity of course, but a surprisingly reasonable entry fee of 40 euro.

Kinda cool I have to admit. I like the idea of a "global champion" who is literally the last man(or woman) standing. The fact that its pretty skewed to ultra joggers probably means of them will win it but the concept is interesting.

Good to see a mass participation/ charity event w/ such a competitive element. Imagine how much you'd dig in if you saw the chase car creeping up on you…..

ok - off to find my copy of "Fundamental Applied Maths Leaving Cert Folens 1st Edition" so i can figure out the rate of acceleration of the car

Ultra joggers won't hit the marathon mark in 3:08!

Isn't that somewhere around DK's marathon PB?

Saw this. Looks like a great event.

A bit like the Fukuoka marathon for the masses.

    Even the route sounds great.
The route begins in the iconic town of Killarney, renowned for its National Park, mountainous backdrop and scenic lakes, before heading west towards Killorglin, famed for its ‘Puck Fair’ festival.

Other noteworthy locations along the route include Cahirciveen, birthplace of ‘The Liberator’ Daniel O’Connell and golfing mecca Waterville, once a popular holiday destination for silent movie icon, Charlie Chaplin.

Rain, hail or shine, competitors will be inspired by this special place that’s attracted countless visitors from around the world.

DK is the only ultra runner you know?
Even if it is, a 3:08 marathon is still not jogging.

I saw John Byrne win the Donadea 50k last year in 3:07 after cruising through the marathon in 2:37. Someone like him would have a chance of winning I suppose, and I sure I wouldn't call him a jogger.

You're absolutely right there TFB- I definitely wouldn't call JB a jogger! That being said there is no one on god's green earth who is easier to wind up than Ultrajoggers, tri"athletes" and "adventure" racers…. They take the bait every time!!:D:D:D:D

Sorry to tell you, but it was transparently obvious from a mile away. Way too obvious to possibly wind anyone up.

Keith Whyte, Dan Doherty and Barry Minnock, along with John, would all be other obvious contenders for this, if they were to give it a go. Pacing for this would need to be spot on. Good mental challenge.

I reckon someone like Kipsang or possibly Mutuai would be the favourite globally(if they could be bothered)

Reminds me of Stephen King's The Long Walk. If participants were shot as their pace dropped below that of the sweeper car, I'd go and watch.
So what happens as you get passed? Do you have to make your own way to the finish, or does the sweeper car magically pick everyone up (which reminds me of a Tardis)?

Seems very unlikely a marathon jogger would be able to win it. Surely a real runner like Usain Bolt would be the favourite. He's much faster after all.
