I was told once (very many years ago) that it was cheaper to leave fluorescent bulbs on than turn them off on account of it being so expensive to replace them whilst they were so cheap to run (allied to the fact that turning them onn and off shortened their life)

I never heard it so claimed since.Did anyone ever hear it said and would/could it have been true?

And would it apply to the new long-life bulbs?

The amount of energy needed to turn on a fluorescent bulb lasts 1/100 of a second and uses the same amount of power to run a bulb for a few seconds so turning off the light for more than 5 seconds will save you money.
As to saving money over the life of the bulb they say if you leave a room for 15 minutes or less leave them on and if longer turn them off.:)
