Just noticed this tonight. RTE radio stations on Saorview now carrying MHEG displays like the ones (BBC etc) on Freeview. Here is RTE Radio 1:

Yeah, funny enough, I noticed that today.

Better than a totally black screen.

Yes. Wonder will they develope it further. No interactivity at all for now. Here's BBC 5 Live from Freeview. You get a slimmed down text service with it, programme schedule, news headlines etc.

BBC radio one even tells you details of the song playing.

What receivers displayed a totally black screen?

Prior to these MHEG displays, The Walker WP645TS-HD Combo used to display (see attached picture) this type of caption floating about the screen when on the Saorview radio stations (or satellite radio with no MHEG).

Note that RTE Radio 1 Extra was being received when the attached picture was displayed.
The receiver stupidly deleted off the word 'Extra' at the end and replaced with "..." , very confusing as it appeared to have been receiving 'RTE Radio 1' rather than 'RTE Radio 1 Extra'! At least that is no longer an issue.

A year ago I bought a digital samsung TV for my lounge.

I love radio. Now I had great radio listening late in the evening in my darkend room with just a tiny glow from the very small 'low intensity' moving radio icon. It was bliss. Now I have this huge red, yellow, orange green or whatever fireball glowing all over the room. I find this really obtrusive . It has ruined the ambiance and my listening pleasure. Its getting more like recieving Television. I want radio! not TV. Why does it have to be forced on us. why can't it be optional.

Anyone noticed that friendly options seem to be a thing of the past now, its all mandatory changes. Its called progress, apparently:cool:

I noticed the teletext was taken from old RTE1 on the same day as you reported this.
Then looking back over the radio stations.

Could you not listen to the radio on a good quality FM radio, even nicer with good quality headphones and turn off the tv ?

You may be able to switch your screen off altogether while listening to radio.

I have two samsungs: After tuning in to the radio channel, on one of them I go to menu -> setup => general => energy saving => picture off. On the other it's menu => system => eco solution => energy saving => picture off

You can still adjust the volume which shows a brief volume display which automatically returns to no picture display but if you change channels the tv comes back out of eco mode & picture comes back on, so you have to change the settings back to no picture.

If you play around with your tv settings you'd probably also have that option, giving you a totally black screen.

Sure, I live in a damn hole where I can get crappy FM from three different transmitters depending which room the receiver in the house is located. Radio on Saorview is a big bonus, pity I have to go to satellite for Newstalk & Today FM which remains elusive for which I can only get decent reception via the internet.

Trouble is you have to go through that mess every time. A 7 in the morning I'm too bleary eyed to plough through the menus when listening to "Morning Ireland"

Put an FM Radio aerial in attic or chimney? If you have an old VHF TV aerial try that.

A "halo" is rubbish. A Discone works better.

I always found the Discone falls apart.

Then it's either poorly made or incorrectly assembled. The problem with a Halo is two-fold:
    1) It's horizontal polarised. Vertical is more useful (Whip, vertical dipole or Discone)
    2) It's got negative gain compared to a simple vertical whip!

"Rubbish" wasn't referring to build quality. The reason for a Halo was that in the 1950s in UK there was ONLY the 3 BBC stations and they were all horizontally polarised. It was for caravans. Never made sense on buildings. Yet you often see them installed here for VHF Radio instead of the better alternatives because they have been in the UK supplier catalogue for fifty years. Stupidity.

Thank you. I now turn the picture off.
    Appreciate the info.
