    Hello There,

We are starting up a little company that is focused on a particular clothing line lets say children's aprons, with the unique element being various unique slogans that are being put on them. Do we have copyright or a month after we launch could we see Carrolls (the company that sells all the Irish stuff) selling them with no comeback for us.

Is there anything we can do to protect ourselves. We would only need copyright for the slogans on particular garments but there are a lot of different slogans.

    Thanks

    Toose

Depending on the originality and length of these slogans they may not qualify for copyright protection. A trademark would do what you want but that would cost €250 per slogan...

What you need is a solicitor to advise you on the various intellectual property issues that could arise here (copyright, trademarks, passing off). Just as an aside, you don't need to register copyright. It exists from the moment of creation is the thing meets the legal tests.

There are solicitors who are qualified trademark agents as well. There is a list of them in the law directory and I assume that the Law Society would give out the information if you rang, OP.
