Hi, anyone know of a cheap garage on Dublin northside that can fix the drivers electric window. I have an NCT in the first week of January and I believe this will cause a fail?

    It is a visual, yeah.

    What's the car OP?

    2002 A3

The window will open around 1/3 the way down from the top, does it have to be fully functional or enough to give hand signals

My neighbour had the same problem. His window would go down less than half way,a and it would get stuck, you would even have to keep shaking it back and forth to get it to go back up again. It didn't cause a problem in the NCT. Maybe the tester wasn't fussy or missed it though.

The OP could be lucky like your friend. The test is 'Check that the driver’s window operating mechanism is functioning properly' and the reason for failure is described as 'Opening mechanism of driver’s window not operating' so if the tester only bothers to partially open the window and then closes it, you could get away with it.

Whether 'not operating' includes 'partially operating' is open to debate and probably the mood of the guy testing your car on the day and whether he's in a hurry or not. Might be a good idea to book it in for a slot just before lunchtime or last thing in the day.

Have you checked the window reg behind the interior panel on door? Any movement suggests that something might be caught on it or need some WD to loosen it up.

The problem is the electric switch wont open/close it at all, it pulls down 1/3 of the way by gripping the top with my fingers and pulling it down. I have to get out and use my hands as suction cups to push it back up.

The mechanism inside is broke i'd say, i was wondering if i could pass the test by pulling it down some of the way just to get a hand out.

The quote from the NCT manual I posted above should answer your question, the mechanism has to be 'functioning properly' - simply being able to yank the glass up and down with your hands won't cut it.

In your last post you're basically asking 'if I can manually open the window, is that OK?' and the answer appears to be no it is not because the mechanism is the issue, not whether you can open the window or not.

Im not a mechanic but it could be the linkage on the rails that hold and raises / lowers the glass has come off or the glass has come out of the guide rails. As I said I am no mechanic but have seen this problem with an Opel Vectra before. Motor and switch was fine, so mightnt be too costly to fix in your case if it is not the motor. Can you take off the door panel and see is there any loose parts? It wont pass the NCT by pulling it down by hand or leaving it down etc.
