Advantage of Policing Experience

    Hi Guys

Just a quick question to see what other emergency service personnel think

With the upcoming Garda Recruitment, a small debate has raged on whether prior policing experience would be an advantage to candidates or not

I would be of the view that a candidate with prior policing experience would have an advantage come interview stage when they could demonstrate how exactly they have worked within a frontline policing environment. As where somebody from outside a policing background would not have the advantage of prior experience

as a disclaimer, I am not advocating that all people who have a policing background would be the best candidates, merely pointing out that having a frontline policing background would give a certain desirable quality for the role of Garda and therefore an advantage

Just a quick yes or no

    Many Thanks

Mods, this is merely for information gathering purposes and not for inflammatory debate

Would prior policing experience be advantageous for a Full Time Garda role 16 votes

Yes, it would be desireable and advantageous having prior policing experience

No, prior policing experience would not trump other experience and would not be desirable

No - what your basically asking is do reserves have a better chance... call a spade a spade

Well we will see when advertised if it says frontline policing experience required or not. If not then it doesn't

    Doesnt need to say it

its common sense that it would be

in fairness, how could it not be an advantage!?

Some people may have the policing experience but it showed they are incapable rather than capable...

Theres always variables but the OP is only asking one thing

if i run a campaign for an engineering job in the morning, i am going to be impressed more with somebody who has experience of doing the job i want rather than those who think they may be able to do the job i want

This day next week we'll know all the requirements and what's going to be involved in applying. I'd imagine the advertisement will be the exact same but when you go to apply there will be a form for reserves and a form for the general public. Both will be identical just on the reserve form you will put your reg number and maybe station. This will just give public jobs a general idea of how many from each are applying.

Who is to say if that will even happen they have back peddled before have they not, lets not all jump over the gate rather than waiting for it to be opened.

As for the question above experience personal should be the order of the day, people have given up their time and volunteered to do this work, its only right that they should be considered first the same as its now done in the Uk, it took the Uk a long time to figure this one out, prob take the AGS a lifetime to figure it out over here if they ever do.

The problem with Ireland is they are too hung up on change they are afraid of it instead of embracing it for the better good of the country, good old Ireland stuck in time its like the ice age.
