I look up and there's a hawk on the garden wall looking through the patio door at me ,about 6 feet from me ...
I went outside about 3 foot from him he didn't stir, then flew (a bit clumsily)over to back of neighbours house...
I'm going picking my son from playschool now,but reckon he'll still be there in 15 mins...
Vet ? CSPCA ? any advice ? I'm in cork ,think its a sparrow hawk...maybe

    Go to this page

http://www.irishwildlifematters.ie/animals/birds.html but first give someone on this page http://www.irishwildlifematters.ie/animals/contacts.html a call.

If it was just a bit stunned for some reason it might be ok by itself after a few mins. If it still appears injured/unwell by the time you've gotten back it might not be in such good condition though. I think the best way to handle it is to put a towel around it and put it in a covered box, somewhere warm or at least somewhere not too cold, with a *small* amount of water.

Thats just advice off the top of my head though - give someone a call on that page and they'll be better able to advise, and/or look at the instructions on the first page and decide whats best yourself.

As is always the case for things like this, I recommend you intervene only if necessary.

How did you get on Mark? Unfortunately with Spars, and especially males by the time they are noticed to be unwell it's already too late! Twas the first good hard frost here in Galway last night and most likely your bird experienced the same. Best is to keep it in a dark cardboard box in a warm spot but it also needs to be fed 'good' food. Only raw meat, not cooked. Fresh, lean beef will suffice for a day or two but as I said it's probably already too late. When low in 'sugar' one of the first things that shuts down is their digestive system so even though you might be able to get food into it, it may not be able to put over from it's crop to the stomach. If it still alive get back and I'll tell you what to do. Dave

Sorry, don't try give it any water!

Sorry for not getting back earlier , I was at work...
I put the hawk in the polytunnel on a perch and gave it some raw mince(not ideal but what I had ). it didn't take well to the perch and flopped onto the floor...
We've been on to a falcon sanctuary they reckon it's a perigren falcon in poor shape ,we're bringing it up to them this evening... Hope the trip doesn't freak him out and he survivesthe journey...

There are a lot less Peregrines in the country than there are Sparrowhawks, so hopefully it can be helped and released again!

    Keep us updated!

Only just seeing this thread now. Well done Marckcheese, a lot of people would not have tried to help a bird so serious kudos for what you did.

Hope it survived the trip to the sanctuary and that you will be back on here with good news.

Latest news is that it's definitely a young peregrine falcon, they reckoned it's injured it's foot somehow , but they also gave her some anti-poison medication...
She's responded really well and is eating (quaill for lunch apparently :) )
So a big thank you to ANIMAL MAGIC sanctuary in kilmalock, and hopefully the falcon will be flying around east cork again soon ...
