I need advice..loads of it. :). Myself, 55 and my partner 60, are really really hoping to move to Roscommon, have really fallen in love with a house in Knockavroe...We have just had an offer on our cottage here in Wicklow, the plan originally had been to move to Connemara, but...things change.. I know, the fact I dont drive makes this sound fairly daft, and the fact hes a taxi driver probably even madder.. but, can anyone give me any advice?.. how far is Knockavroe from Boyle?...would my poor other half get stoned out of the town if he got a licence for Roscommon?..I would really loved to get involved in the community......Im a veterinary nurse, anything voluntary I could do??...just would love some general feedback ..xx Anne

The ISPCA centre in Keenagh in Longford might need a volunteer, I don't know how far that is from Knockavroe though sorry!

Sorry the house didnt work out,a lot of people give out that ros people are very unfriendly to outsiders and close minded but dont let them scare you off. The husband will prob get some giving out for being an outsider taxi driver but hes as muxh a right to be there as the other fellas. Theres not too much going on here in ros like there is in Galway and its far away from the sea good shops good restaurants and the like bit thats part of the apeal of it

All I know about Boyle is that it has a very active 'arts' scene, King House being a hub of activity.
Lough Key is on your door step.
You're very close to Sligo, Carrick on Shannon and Roscommon town.
I imagine it's like most places, it is what you make of it yourself.
    Best of luck!

Roscommon is a lot friendlier than other places I have lived in Ireland!

get involved in things and get to know people.

Thanks so much for your replies guys xx. Ive never really spent much time in Roscommon I have to say, but really loved what I saw of it and the people we met. When I moved to Wicklow 33 years ago, I moved into a very old settled area, but people as a whole saw past the blow in bit, and I would very much love to get involved in the community, its why Im moving to a more rural area, Im not particularly arty lol,but have lots of other things to offer I hope...just believe in taking people at face value, and take life as it comes... The whole way of life on the East Coast has become not for us any more, and as Im lucky and can work from home, given decent broadband!!! Im lucky...Appreciate ye taking the time to respond...

The Roscommon people are lovely people. Obviously you have to get to know them and the best way is to get involved in local activities e.g. walking groups, Operation Transformation groups ( I'm not saying you're fat!) Quiz nights, charities whatever takes your fancy. here should be a good range of keenly priced properties available, particularly in the north of the county

Lol...sadly, my knees are in a state of structural failure ...due to age, and the slight need for Operation Transformation .. but I absolutely understand what you are saying, and absolutely agree.. Thanks for taking the time, and enjoy the weekend...
