Horizon Home Network ???

Can anybody give a step by step guide as to how to stream video from a Windows 7 64 bit PC to the Horizon box. I've tried Create New Network, Join New Network ....all to no avail. I'm seeing my neighbouring networks but not my own. When I try Manual Entry it doesn't recognise itself. I've downloaded Twonky whatever that is. It just means the box displays the Twonky icon and the name I gave it.

The PC is upstairs so I'll be using wireless. No UPC links please, I've already seen the rubbish on the UPC website which assumes I have a separate router (not applicable - the router is in the Horizon box).

On box no.2 at this point - the first model couldn't receive TV. If it goes to number 3 I'm looking for one of the old boxes back.

First, Dont change the network settings on the Horizon box. If its a standalone bodx with no external UPC modem you need to be in Create network mode. Any other setting will mess up your use of the box.

I don't understand by what you mean by seeing your neighbouring networks and not your own but at a guess youre in a situation where you have machines on different addresses.

The horizon box will give all devices an address of 192.168.192.x by default. check the IP on your windows machine and make sure its in this range.

    Are you using windows firewall?

Anyways try setup media sharing using windows media player.

    Open Windows media player

Click teh 'Stream' Button and tick Automatically allow devices to play my media.

Then click Stream and 'More streaming Options'

In the window that tick the 'Allow all' button

    Press ok

On the horizon box goto My Library>My devices Your PC name should be listed there and any media thast available in windowmedia center should be playable

You can download the twonky media server from the upc site. You need to logon to your user account and download it from there. Install it on your laptop, point it towards the media you want to stream and then go to mylibrary>mydevices on your horizon box and you should be set. Alternatively you can use any other media server, I'm using servioo at the moment which is working great for me. There's plenty of others, just google home media server. If you need any help just ask:)

When sharing directories with win 7 you need to enable share with everyone. That made the big difference for me

Did that. Twonky is an apt name. Doesn't work even when pointed at USER/Documents where all the video is stored.
It seems to work alright when I disable my firewall and set up a new connection each time I want to stream something. This I can do by adding the box to the Windows 7 Home Network.

No, neighbouring networks means my mobile phone and 6 or 7 houses in the vicinity of my street. I know that because one of them is a pub with free wi-fi. The damned box is supplying the internet to my house so it doesn't detect itself. I'm assuming it is detecting "all other networks". No use to me. Nor is the downgraded box. Porting the movies around the house on a USB stick is far more reliable.

I'll try the Microsoft windows player solution. Otherwise the box goes back and Sky get a call.

Have you got the horizon box set up as an access point?

Not quite sure what that means. The box acts as the router for the house. So its the access point for the net. When I do manage to get anything streaming (just did with the firewall up thanks to the media player tip ) its a client (has to be, all the movies are upstairs on the hard-drive). It does actually work, its just that theres so much fiddling about.

Thanks for all the help, people. I'm due a complete reinstall of the laptop anyway (what Saturdays and beer exist for). This will probably all work itself out when I don't have conflicting software / drivers etc. getting in the way.

This is simply the same as setting the box to 'Create Network' mode.

I'm using Join Network. Still the thing was up and running this morning so the streaming seems to be working. I think it was the settings on the laptop upstairs that were screwing things up.

Join network mode is for when you UPC call Deconsolidated mode when you have an external router. Basically this turns off things like the horizon DHCP, access point and so on.

If you are using the Horizon box as your cable modem then you need to be in Create network mode for it to work correctly.

If you have a separate router or similar device on your network make sure to turn OFF DHCP on that device. My suspicion is your network conflicts are being caused by both another device putting out 192.160.1.x addresses and the horizon box putting out 192.168.192.x addresses when in Create network mode and when you set it to Join Network mode the other device is giving everything addresses.

No other modem or router of any kind in the house. That went back last Friday. My phone is a Nokia museum piece so thats not upsetting the connection. Of course I'm using the box as the modem/router - it also works as a TV receiver and provides the home phone.

'll do the reinstall on Saturday. Reset the box again as seems to be a daily tradition. On my own experience (no TV on box 1,phone working, net working though) ), 50% of these Horizon boxes are dodgy anyway. The networking thing is a luxury extra that works some of the time. .
