Fiat Stilo Electrical Problems

I have a 2002 Fiat Stilo. Mechanically it goes great, but has had occasional electrical problems. Lately, when I have turned the steering wheel, I can feel it 'catch' on something, the radio shuts off with a noticeable bang and I get error messages on the screen: ABS, ASR and EBD failure. A couple of seconds later it resets. It had only been happening occasionally. But this evening it happened constantly and when I was turning the wheel the lights on the radio and dash screen were flickering and then bang the radio was gone etc. The steering wheel jerked back from the direction I was turning it in. I've left it in college overnight as I didn't want to try driving it home.

Would anyone have any idea what's going on? Is there anything I can do to fix it? I have an auto electrician whose name I got from here before and he's very good, but I'm low on funds and he's pricy. Any advice would be appreciated.

Make sure the battery connections are sound and there's a good body earth from the battery. Also bring it to an auto electrician and get the battery load tested, I'd be fairly confident it's a tired battery that's not happy with the cold weather. It's a very very common problem on all the electric power steering Fiats, they're overly sensitive to battery voltage.

Thanks for that. There's a cheap Halford's battery in it so that could be the problem, I'd be delighted if it was that simple. I went to over to college and brought help and the car made a total liar out of me so it's back home now anyway. I think I'll ring the auto electrician and see what he has to say.

Just wanted to let you know that you were bang on about the battery. Left the car for five minutes last night and when I came back it was dead as a door nail. Had the AA out this morning and the battery was practically disconnected when he looked at it. He said it was from driving on pot holed roads etc. He reconnected it, charged it, checked it and said it was working fine. Haven't had any problem with the steering since :) It was a stroke of luck that it died last night cos I would have called the pricy auto electrician today when the AA was able to fix it and he also confirmed what you said.

Good to hear, and at least it was just a connection rather than a duff battery :)
