Just wondering if any boards members in the North Tipp area could recommend to me any good agents for any of the local factories i.e ABP nenagh , roscrea etc. I'm looking for agents you've found good to deal with , who'll look after organising haulage etc . PM me if you don't want to be posting names contact details etc. Thanks in advance

does such a thing exist as a good factory agent.

Ha, maybe not! Well put it this way, for the farmer finishing under 100 cattle a year is there any benefit financially using an agent compared to booking the cattle in directly with the factory yourself?

What sort of cattle have you?;)

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Hex and Aax , mostly bullocks but some heifers also ;)

For the HEX, talk to Michael Cleary. He deals with the He prime for AIBP in Nenagh and you will get 15c bonus roughly.

Thanks Tubby, I usually book the Herefords in with Michael alright. I find the HE prime scheme very good.

Anyone any opinions on wheter using an agent is worthwhile or not? The reason I'm asking is I usually book in AAX and HEX cattle through the Angus and HE prime scheme agents. Recently had a group of FR bullocks (overage) though and booked them in directly with the factory myself, I was wondering if I'd have been better off using an agent?

Does the agent transport them also? In one of the places I go to, I sometimes deal with both, i.e. give both a ring. If the agent brings them, he takes his transport fee; if I bring them myself, there's nothing extra taken off. Probably no harm to keep in with the agent as he may be able to get cattle killed for you if there's pressure on, a bit of extra leverage.

An advantage of an agent is that he may spot cattle that are going over fat, or that need more feeding. He may also warn you if prices are going to drop in reality( as opposed to scaremongering). You can show him cattle and wait for a price at certain time of year prices fall and rise. If you have certain types of cattle like Friesian he may be aware of flat pricing.

The other thing is that he acts as a buffer between you and the factory. I have found that I do better through an agent over the years especially if you have small numbers

I remember I had 10 Angus heifers, agent came and said only 8 were fit so he took them. I regretted keeping the 2 so the following week I brought them in myself, beef had dropped 5 cent, and I made 100 euro more per heifer! just goes to show!

This is a very important point that Pudsey raises, if a problem arises you may be better with an agent who will know who to go to get it solved to the satifaction of all.

Whats the charge for using an agent over booking them into the factory yourself?
