5.30 this evening, pitchdark outside, and the TV station is commenting on its afternoon line up, personally I thought it was evening time.

What does the good people of AHs think?

I'd say the afternoon is from 12:00 - 1700. I would class the evening time as 17:01 to 22:00.

    Morning: 6-12
    Lunchtime: 12-2
    Afternoon: 2-5
    Evening: 5-9
    Night: 9 onwards

I'd say any time from 4.30 - 5 pm. Whenever The Weakest Link used to start is when I used to associate the afternoon ending and the evening starting.

OP are you actually a mint sauce?

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Always saw 12-3 as afternoon, so 4 o clock onwards as evening.
    After 8/9 to be night.

I'd say it depends if you had described an afternoon gathering to your housemate as "Lunch" or not.

What about the one minute in between 17:00 and 17:01?

Depends on time of year. Evening begins for me at either 6pm or when it starts to get dark, whichever comes first.

Changes with the time of year if you ask me. At this time of year it can start getting dark at half 4 and the atmosphere feels like evening. However at the peak of summer you can go out shopping for the day and not realise it's 9 o'clock until the shops start closing because it's only just started getting dark.

Sheldon from the Big Bang theory says it best:

Wolowitz: "So, listen, what are you doing tomorrow afternoon?"
    Sheldon: "Be more specific."
    Wolowitz: "4:30."
Sheldon: "That's not afternoon. That's prevening."
    Wolowitz: "What?"
Sheldon: "It's a time of day I invented. It better defines the ambiguous period between afternoon and evening, prevening. I'm fairly certain it will catch on as it fills a desperate need."

Yeah. That's why I find that show desperately unfunny. Actually scratch that, just desperate.

This was discussed on the last word and it was decided that as matt started the show with good evening, he ultimately made it law that evening started at 4:30!

Typical Fascist show , as a mouthpiece for this utterly facist state. If Cooper decides it's evening, then I declare it day, I'm a revolutionary, stop the oppression, bring in the light! The Last Word indeed.

Afternoon ends when the hangover starts to wear off, and evening starts with your first drink.
