Leaking Tap

I've recently moved into an old house, and the cold water tap on the bath was leaking. Nothing major, but a leak none the less. Went to replace the washer the weekend, but when I had the new washer in, the leak was significantly worse.
Checked that the washer was okay, and noticed that the area in the tap where the washer seals has a groove worn in it. The old washer had moulded itself to a degree into the groove, so I put it back in place to reduce the leaking.
Any suggestions on ways to fix this groove without replacing the tap itself? The bath is encased in tiles which have been in place a good 60 years, so I'd prefer not to have to take them off and risk breaking them.
