Family holiday in Germany

We are a family with 3 children aged 7, 10 and 13. We always go on camping holidays in France, Italy and Spain but, for a change, would like to go to Germany next Summer.
Normally we fly to our destination, hire a car and rent a mobile home from a campsite for a week. However, I've checked all the websites and there's no option to do this (ie rent a mobile home in a campsite) in southern Germany. A swimming pool is an essential feature.
Can anybody recommend a place to stay preferably near Munich that would be suitable for a family?

we stayed in this place near the Austrian border in Oberaudorf which has a swimming pool.

I dont know why theres no camping sites like in France but it might be simply that near the alps you have a second high season in the winter for wintersports and skiing so building apartments rather than a mobile home is more suitable.

We stayed in oberstdorf in the summer, two kids, but didnt have a pool.

the great thing about it, is that you dont need a car. the train gets you right to the door.

flew to memmingen. then had bikes as part of the place we stayed.

Not actually in Germany, but check out Zell am See - there's loads to do there in the Summer. There are a couple of campsites around the lake and it's basically one huge big swimming pool. We flew to Memmingen one year, hired a car and drove down. I *think* it was inthe order of 4 hours or so. Last time we took the train and stopped in Munich on the way down and Augsburg on the way back - it can work out very cheap with families since they have great family fares.

We booked apartments in the centre of the town - they had no pool but we didn't need it as the public pools (indoor & outdoor) plus the lake swimming were fine. In addition, they have opened some of the (snow making) reservoirs up the mountains, so you have the chance to go for a swim with some of the most amazing Alpine views.

There are plenty of activities on in the town throughout the Summer, and plenty of adventure things to do if you are so minded.

Sorry op for hijacking your post but a couple of questions for munchkin, we are booked into same apartments as you stayed in, do you know if they are far from the ski lifts and also are they pretty central in the village? Also mentioned the train goes to the door, is that from Memmingem and how do I book it? Sorry for all the questions.

    www.bahn.de

That is main website for DB in Germany, tickets can be booked there.

What may interest you is a regional day ticket, these are known as Lander ticket.

Bayern is the land = province = Bavaria.

Lander ticket = unlimited travel after 9am on all regional trains in the Land.

NB: not faster intercity trains (IC), only regional trains: RE and RB.

OP literally every large village in Germany, has a freibad which is an open air public pool (they are spotless unlike what you would find in Ireland).

Thanks for that Geuze, great help. Have decided to fly into Munich and get Bayern ticket for the five of us at the airport. I don't suppose anyone has any info on Oberaudorf or what it's like for skiing.

Hello there Happy New Year from Germany,

been to Niederaudorf (next village) on our way to Merano in summer stayed at Gasthof Keindl.
Oberaudorf has a skilift but I wouldnt say its a ski resort.
Here some info about skiing in Oberaudorf (in German but with webcam and pictures)

Skilift is in walking distance from the village center but about 1km from the appartments someone mentioned here before in the thread.

They have 40 cm snow at the moment.

    Hope that helps a bit

btw if someone has a link to any info on touring southwest Kerry in April:D

Thanks Schalker, do you know if there is a ski bus from the apartments that go to the ski lift. Would it be enough skiing for beginners & intermediates?
