The Irish times published an survey today discussing the general lack of knowledge in the public on basic matters. I found it surprising that so much people were unaware on issues such welfare, politicians pay, standard of living etc. Interestingly didn't know some myself, what about you?

The level of public knowledge about some of the key economic and social facts of life in Ireland today, as revealed in the latest Irish Times Ipsos MRBI poll shows we have a limited understanding of how public money is spent and of how society has changed in recent years. We also believe Ireland compares unfavourably with other countries, and we significantly overestimate the prevalence of Facebook and Twitter.

Well seeing as our politicians and senators know fcuk all about ordinary life, and the hardships some middle earning families endure month in month out,, while they get lavish salaries and claim expenses for as little as wiping their backs sides......

    It all evens out op.

Most of the general public are clueless, no surprise really. Work any job where you have direct contact with a lot people on a daily basis and it quickly becomes clear.

It is, didn't you know? You must be part of the 28% of people who got that wrong too.

I have come to the conclusion from going about my daily life that common sense isn't very common

I often wonder how many people actually take part in these polls, is there a link to the numbers? Is it a thousand per poll or is this my own misconception?

The statistics quoted in this are nonsense

For example 75k is average paye income not counting self employed income.

Also DIRECT payments to each politician is circa 140 to 160k with expenses exclusive of pension costs. DIRECT payment to people on dole state pension is less than 200 euro a week.

    Stupid tabloidesqe article

    How much is middle earning?

Between the top and the bottom.

Our Govt don't know the difference yet either dx.

Michael O'Learys wife would get the same child benefit payment as my wife.

Easier to give and cut in equal measures, instead of means testing though.

    Wonder no longer.

Every three weeks, Ipsos MRBI conducts a telephone omnibus survey of the adult population, which produces research findings within 4 days of fieldwork completion. Omnipoll is a telephone omnibus survey which interviews a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults aged 15+ every two weeks. Our sample is quota controlled using the latest CSO estimates and is stratified to include listed, unlisted and mobile phone numbers to ensure all segments of the population are included.

The general populous of Ireland are moronic to say the least, have very little hobbies or interests and are utterly ignorant on political issues.

You probably mean populace. Populous is an adjective.

The most worrying thing is these people vote ,and vote on these principles. Sheds to light perhaps the reason why useless politicians with inapplicable promises are voted in, on a regular basis.

There's a lot of people out there who've never read a newspaper or watched any current affairs programmes. Their political 'knowledge' stems from conversations with equally uninformed mates down the pub and the late night radio phone-in shows.
Thankfully a lot of them don't bother to vote.

If most of the public don't know the basics on these topics, by definition, you can't refer to them as general knowledge.

I was implying that it was what I had assumed would be simple general knowledge(for the most part). Unfortunately this proved not to be the case.
