would need pics at a minimum
    what engine is in it
    what's the roof like

but depending on the state of it, if its in any way present able its probably a five digit car

I have owned and restored several. The mechanical parts are easy to get but some fuel injection parts can be pricey and you need a guy who knows how to set them up. There are several so called "experts" who claim they can do it but cant.

The main thing with these is the body. they can harbour serious rot and still look like a show winner. Check out the floors and sills, which are hidden. If the carpet is damp, or water in the rear storage compartment it spells trouble for the floorpan and rear chassis legs.

Chrome parts and interior trim, leather, seals, soft top etc.., are expensive to do correctly.

Enginewise the 230/250/280 are all similar. If you really want a manual then go for a 230SL but for auto the smoother larger 7 bearing engines are nicer, having more torque.

Overall inspect it with a fine tooth comb and be prepared for big bills if the body is iffy or was poorly repaired.

Anything you want to know just ask, I may even know the car.

Pricewise..............a car needing work could be 20k but I really would pay ANY money for one that needed a full body resto as working on the body on these is difficult.

il get some pic at the one im looking at . body all good some rust under were they all go it 230 eng out but if you but back in you could drive it . he looking E21 for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Mmm.......its really down to the condition of the body and ensuring all trim is present and correct. "Some" rust underneath could cost you €4k in labour and more in parts.

    RHD/UK ??

Why is the engine out ?? They modified the 230SL engines 3 or 4 times in as many years and they are not the same as the 230 from any other Merc.

    PM me the pics.

............yes but you'd be paying twice the budget to have a chance of getting one without any rust.

Things like the chrome grille is now serious money for these. It's something like 4K sterling now for a complete part.

There were just under 19000 230SL's made, a little over 5000 250SL's and the rest were 280SL's.

Any one of them could have had the sideways rear seat option, its not hugely rare but nice to have, though not particularly safe to be honest.

That Pagoda that Jon Miller is doing I would consider to be in very good condition prior to resto. Most are savaged by rust in every nook & cranny. Its a top job he is doing, although I would have tried to get it as near to the way the factory painted it, small details, like duplicating factory overspray. Also its a shame the leather they are using is not exactly the correct pattern.

But top workmanship as usual !

Sorry matey, but I fail to see how you can say 'no rust anywhere' without pulling the car apart and judging by those pics all you have looked at is the drivers wing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

even in those pics I see rust, the wheels are rusty, there is a suspicious looking shading under the grille an the way one of the pieces of side trim stands proud in the last few pictures screams underlying trouble at me.

couple that with the I'll fitting hood, pereshed rubber and missing chrome, would indicate a total rebuild project on your hands, all the rubber lines a lot of the oilseals will probably need replacing.

does it run, can you drive it?

as she sits I wouldn't offer more than 8 for it and i'd reasonably expect an offer of over 5 would secure you many many long nights of hardship and pain

he going to take it out for me next week for me to look and offer money for it il get good pic then . i been looking for long time for one all around are 20 up were would you get a w113 for E 8000 there not out there on less it for the bin.none on any web sites may odd one in uk or left hand drive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

like I said, if she goes and stops without too much rattling then yeah over 8 if the rest of er is there, but as she sits its a 5k offer, the rear 'glass' of the hood looks sun damaged an even semipunctured in one of those photos, it dosent fit right around the base, how much would that cost you? total respray? rechrome? what's the interior like?

at the end of the day fully restored that's a 40-50 thousand euro car, the problem might arise that parts and labour might run close to that.

that said it might be a pearler, realisticly you wont know until you test drive it, and i mean test drive it not just roll it out of the shed and start the engine, but haul it off down the road an put it through its paces.

I'm not trying to scare you off from buying it, just trying to set you into the right frame of mind when doing the deal, many of us here have bought unwisely in the past due to rose colored glasses and the pangs of nostalgia, for my sins there's an e21 316 that went in the crusher after I finally accepted that the chassis was more patch an rust than actual car. thing is it didn't look like a major job until I had devoted most of aa winter to it, each 'just this little bit' mounted up over time, even selling whatever parts I could that was still a costly waste of effort

i see what your saying . il have to look more at it .ones to do up are just so hard to find .i mite get some one in the no about mercs to look at it .i was going to offer E15 for it now you put me thinking.may that lad ben in enniskerry i saw a 115 he did looked a good job

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

You cannot put any value on that car from those pictures. You need to drag it out and get it on a ramp and get someone who knows what to look for to check it out.

As mentioned previously I've seen cars that have been bought for mid twenties over the years that look mint but are full of rust. The panels, chrome and trim are wild money.

There are "experts" out there who do not do the body repairs themselves but will gladly take your money and farm it out. If you want to PM me I will put you directly onto my body man and you can deal directly should you make the purchase. We have several of these sixties Mercs on the go so you can see the issues first hand.

Good luck and hope it works out
