which would be cheaper to run on fuel a vw sharan 1.9 diesel or a ford focus 1.6 petrol it would be mostly short runs.

If your doing short runs then there's very little advantage in driving a diesel.
What milage do you do on average every year?

There's little point in paying a couple if grand extra for a diesel, if it's to save you a euro each week.

The diesel will always be more fuel efficient but its not that simple to work out running cost.

Petrol car will be cheaper to buy and service.
The difference in price can buy a lot of petrol and short runs petrol can work out better with lower maintenance cost.

Your going to have to pay a nice premium to tax the 1.9.
If it's purely from a money saving point, if tax the focus.
Diesels aren't really efficient on short runs.

Tax the Sharan. It's more practical, it's going to be better on fuel and should you have to do any long runs it's going to be much better.

its E145 to tax the Focus and E190 for the Sharan, if doing it by the quarter...

Would you save the 45 quid over the 3 months?
It depends on the ops definition of shorter miles. And then you have the issues of diesels and short runs.
