Just how common are signing bonuses?

Are signing bonuses a done thing in Ireland for decent white collar jobs, such as in Banking or IT?

I've seen one or two people mention on here they got a 1000-2000e signing bonus and those were for entry level positions. But is it more the exception or is it normal enough?

Not to drag this post off topic, but my mate in the States got a 30000 USD signing bonus for a Grad position, unreal!

Frankly, in 20 years plus, R&D, Mfg, OEM Services, Medical Devices, etc.
I have never come across it once.

But that could be just be Engineering.:(

I have never worked in any of the "gravy train" sectors ;)

I have seen some payment made to facilitate particular issues facing new hires.
    • Relocation expenses
    • Paying off an educational loan
    • Paying for a cancelled holiday
    • Etc.

But never a flat, welcome to the team payment. :(

    :(

But would those be 'subs' or an actual payment, because that would surely count as a signing bonus?!

The states is different, most college students have huge college loans from paying fees I the tens of thousands, the signing bonus is standard to help them clear the loans they got to be educated for the position.

Part of the attraction to Ireland for multinationals is a highly qualified work force with little to none college loans so it makes grad positions cheaper to fill

Right yeah, I know that, I'm trying not to compare things to other countries, but to actually ascertain that signing bonuses exist and are common enough.

Fairly common when coming from top business schools. I don't think it's particularly common in Ireland, we don't really have any world class educational institutions.

It's a simple supply and demand thing really.

It might be a tiny factor, business are here because of the tax to be honest. All the real top jobs are in the states where they can get truly well qualified people, with the US work ethos. We really fill in the mid level positions.

If you have a look at gradcracker.com which is mainly engineering sectors, I've seen signing bonuses of anywhere between £1000 and £4000 pounds for graduate programmes. Some pretty good wages also for graduate level jobs.

    That's in the UK right?

Yeah nearly all of them jobs are based in the UK. I've seen a few Eng Grad Programmes in Ireland with signing bonuses but there isn't a site as good as gradcracker in Ireland to have a look at though.

    That would be a payment.

But I would differentiate between a

    (1) Payment made to defray defined costs associated with talking up a new role, such as relocation, which is very common.

    (2) A "Golden Hello" which is a payment made to a sought after employee to sweeten the deal, perhaps to stay within company guidelines for salary, these would be rare in engineering outside of some very-very top end R&D jobs.

I think that there was a tread on this about the Top 4 financial services companies previously
