HDD to SSD (Laptop)

    Hi folks,

I managed to get an okay deal on a Acer S3. I'm actually delighted with it but the mechanical HDD is holding it back a bit. The 840 EVO (oh so shiney with all the geeky features) is on the way for Xmas so I've a Samsung 830 going begging.

I'm okay with hardware part but should I install windows from scratch or clone the current SSD/HDD hybrid to the 830? My main concerns are:

How do you set up the partitions etc so it can sleep and all that?
Can you install a full version of Windows 7 retail and put in the Acer OEM code?
    Have I missed anything?

    Many Thanks!

I just did something very similar :

Downloaded Win7 .iso , fresh install via USB - used OEM code - all good

Reasonably quick to shutdown/boot so didn't bother with sleep stuff

I'm going to put in the SSD, install off a DVD and then stick the OEM code in, that would be grand wouldn't it? Did you get the Win7 ISO off the microsoft website?

    Thanks for the reply.

ISO from Digital River so it'd be safe

You can just download the "Ultimate" version and re-enable the choice of which one you want to install

eicfg remover is what you need to do that

You've lost me sorry. Do you think a DVD install won't work?

A DVD install should work fine

eicfg will modify the ISO you download so it gives you a choice of which "version" of Windows 7 you want to install

( Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Home Premium etc )

You will need a valid code for whichever version you pick

It saves you downloading all the versions if you have other PCs to fix up in the future

Anyone any advice on the partitions?

Not really - i've always just split it in 30:70 kinda thing

    - OS on the smaller one and all data and installers for programs on the bigger one so when the OS needs to be re-installed no hassle with data

Doesn't there need to be a partition for dumping the memory when the laptop sleeps?
