    Timeclock only controls MV
Permanent power to grey wire, when valve opens it then operates internal switch and sends power down white wire to boiler. See wireing instructions in case I've got colours mixed up.!!
Do call professional for personal safety.

Wiring of a MV is dependant on the type of system wiring design, where you may put 230v on a switch live to a oil boiler(as mentioned), gas boiler usually only requires returning whatever voltage comes out of the link on the boiler.

OP it may be wise to have a sparks to confirm what you have and wire it as it's common to blow up pcbs(gas) due to faux pars.

To answer your question the white wire isn't utilised with common wiring designs, I would still follow the above advice and get a sparks.

For 2 port valves, the white wire is for gravity systems, usually wired through a pipe stat for a separate circuit when the MV is closed. The orange becomes live from the permanent live grey when the MV opens.
White wire needs to be positioned in an empty terminal when not used as when MV is closed, the white becomes live.
On 3 port valves the white has a separate use, depending on Y or W plan used.

Sorry if I got my colours wrong, wires crossed a bit. Thanks Shane
