Can GIMP compete with Photoshop?

I’ve just taken up photography as a hobby and really enjoy playing around with photos in GIMP afterwards. I found a guy on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/PhlearnLLC/videos) that uploads amazing tutorial using Photoshop that I’ve been able to follow but I’ve noticed that some basic functions that are available in Photoshop aren’t available in GIMP. Would it be worthwhile investing in a Photoshop program....... Just looking for some opinions?

Um..... in my humble experience, the basics are all there. My ability tends to be lacking when it comes to in depth post production, but that'd be the same irrespective of whether I use the gimp or photoshop. For what I consider the basics, the Gimp is more than adequate for me.

IMHO, if you have the money and need the *other* functionality that photoshop may deliver, or that third parties supply by the way of actions, then go for it. No reason why not. Countless hours of fun to be had actually. Mind you, it won't make you a better photographer, but perhaps a better graphic artist. Also, try meetthegimp for tutorials for the gimp if you want to pursue that sort of thing.
