I doubt anyone is gonna be interested enough to stick
up a thread so here goes...
I'd imagine this along with the fight for the troops card is
possibly the weakest looking card of the year with no
real big names other than diaz and maynard

Looking forward to seeing holdsworth in action and see nothing
but a victory for him and possibly a very big future even though grant
    is no slouch either
Hope diaz takes the main event, not a fan of maynard
Other than that I wouldn't mind seeing corrasini getting his
    ass handed to him

Can't stand the Diaz brothers and I like Maynard so I'll be hoping for a win for Gray. Should hopefully be a good scrap either way.

I only watched about half of this season of TUF so I'm not really rooting for anyone in particular there. Just hoping for some decent fights.

It's a real shame Paddy Holohan didn't make it through. This forum would be buzzing now.

Think Grant is going to win myself.

    Looking forward to the card.

Christ Yves really could have stepped in earlier Maynard took a lot of unnecessary punishment.

Rest of the card was a big pile of meh. Pena looks the real deal. Was rooting for Davey Grant but he was just beaten by a better fighter.

Horrible reffing from Lavigne. I think Gray Maynard should retire, hes taken so much punishment the last few fights. Very poor card overall though.

ref was very poor in the main event, maynard was out on his feet for at least 20secs before he finally stopped it..maynard seems to heading down the road of josh koscheck

there no way back for maynard esp when the likes of
    diaz can knock you out

I thought it should have been stopped earlier but then again if ref had stepped in earlier people would be complaining bout early stoppage.

The women's final was ridiculous. Fair enough Rakozcy wasn't getting out of that position and she'd been mounted for almost 2 minutes but why not stop it 20 seconds earlier? He left it until the last second of the round, if he let it go for that long why not let it go for 1 more second? Ridiculous stoppage IMO, why stop it at all if he lets it go that long? Every big fight mazzagati refs he makes at least one notable error, the guy is beyond incompetent.

Kim Winslow is awful for stand ups as well, is that two events in a row that she stood up fights while both fighters were active and trying to improve position?

The officiating at the highest level of MMA is outrageous, almost every event has notably bad officiating. It puts a huge black mark on the sport.

I think Gray takes a fight against a guy that's lower top 10/top 15 before we start calling for retirement. Maybe that was the most determined, dedicated nate Diaz we've ever seen seeing as he was coming off the first tko of his career. We don't know for sure, Nate did look really sharp from the opening bell and he was sitting down on his punches more than he has in the past. Other fighters have taken far more punishment than Gray and still stayed relevant.

I have no problem with the womens final stoppage. She was looking to defend herself with her legs up until the last few seconds when she just turtled. The remaining time be it a minute or a second should not come into play.

Yet again a late stoppage just because the fighter is still standing. Maynard took way too many blows when it was clear he was defending himself at all.

Holdsworth and Pena were both very impressive.

Surprised Diaz won in that manner.

I really hope we have not seen the last of Grant in the UFC. He was easily the fighter I enjoyed watching the most this season.

I totally agree that the stoppage in the womens was ridiculous. I assumed he was letting it go to the bell as it was so close. If not, then he should have stopped it about 30 seconds before hand.

can you explain why in more detail? when the round ends shouldnt be on the refs mind bar being ready to break things up. When the opponent cant defend themselves it should be stopped.

She wasn't defending for a good few seconds before the stoppage. He kept saying over and over to fight back. The end of the round nearing has always played a part in when the ref would stop a fight - I agree with it (in most cases).

In this instance I would have let it go and have them fight in a new round. She didn't get beat up that bad. Hardly any of the shots went through so Jessica definitely could have came back in the 2nd and put on a good show.

Reckon that's the end of Maynard as a contender.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭adamski8

Well like you said she wasnt defending for a good few secs (ref has to make sure she isnt defending herself intelligently) then he stopped it. I dont think the ref should be clockwatching trying to balance out what time is left into his decision. Just like a KO would get called no matter the time left.

yeah his doppelganger Ray Parlour could have put up a better fight!.

Poor old Motaferri was comically bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭Easy Rod

Thought it was a solid set of fights all round.

Thought the Spencer/Dober fight was quite good, thought Duke looked good if a little inexperienced. Modaferri just not athletic enough to be a skilled combat fighter.

Pleased that Holdsworth and Pena won, was following them the whole way through. Grant is so aggressive that I was worried he might catch him with a big swing, Holdsworth's superior technique won through...he could develop into a force.

Two stoppages were slightly weird but not too many problems. Gray definitely went on too long but he kept looking like the cobwebs were almost clearing...obvious at the end that he was out on his feet for most of the barrage though. Diaz is a dangerous dangerous fighter but not sure if he'll fight for a title again.

I dunno, now that bendo the nullifier is not the champ i see diaz getting another shot. Would be entertaining with pettis, diaz is hard to finish and pettis would try.

To be fair to Yves Lavinge he wasn't to know there was one second left in the round. He obviously heard the clapper and had an idea but there's nothing in the rules that says the fight should be stopped if a fighter is not intelligently defending themselves unless the round is almost over.

A poor card. Blanco celebrating being disqualified with a backflip the highlight for me. Oh and Josh Sampo looked sharp. Had seen some of him before the UFC and looks like he could be a title contender by the end of 2014.

Yves Lavinge reffed Gray/Nate. It was Mazzagati or Yamasaki that stopped the womens fight with a second to go.

Kim Winslow looked to make a bad choice standing up the fighters earlier in the night too. But you dont expect much from her.

My bad I knew it was Mazzagatti. Sorry Yves on the mind for some reason.
Mma roasted always a laugh when Kim Winslow is at work.

Your both wrong. It was Yamasaki reffing the women's final

I had to laugh at Anik during the Duke/Morgan tale of the tape:

"and that... that is 12 feet of woman"

With Winslow, there was easily 18 feet of woman in the octagon

Haha I have a habit of mixing them up. Unfortunately I was quoted before I got to edit my post.

I agree. She was more stuck in the position and taking grazing blows than anything. It's not like she had her hands down and was in danger of being hurt. He heard the clacker and knew it was well into the last 10 seconds.

I think the womens fight should have been let go into the next round.

Moral victory for Roxanne in not getting knocked out.

good thing I didnt stay up to watch this. Was bleak until the last 3 fights which had finishes.

In fairness you can't compare that stoppage to a KO in any way. Completely different, Rakozcy wasn't in danger of being badly hurt there. I guarantee you her corner were telling her there was only a few seconds left so she just covered up. Refs have always taken the time left in the round into consideration in this type of situation. If she was getting her head hopped off the canvas repeatedly it would have been different.

And it's not like he should be counting the seconds himself, but this stoppage would have been equally ridiculous if it was stopped with 4 seconds left as in the last second. He know it was well into the last 10 seconds and it's not like any of the strikes were landing heavy or flush.
