Sky box blocked help

I was given a sky + HD box, I set it up in my bedroom, It has the free to air channels and works fine, I tried my sky card from downstairs and worked perfectly so I went and ordered a card off sky. When it arrived I called sky to authenticate the card and they tried to sell me a new box saying that the box was faulty and wouldn't work, The new card didn't work and the card from downstairs that previously worked no longer works, But I can still receive the TV listings and free to air channels, What have sky done to the box and is there a way for me to fix it without paying 150 quid for a new box. If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

    Who gave you the box?
Was it out of contract with no money owing on the account of the person who owned it previously?

So you were able to access all the channels in your package and all the Sky+ features without having had the card paired to the box?

You didnt indicate if you are paying for a multiroom sub?

I don't have multiroom just utv and other free channels no other channels like rte or sky

I dont see how you could have used a subscription card and put it in a spare box and were able to receive all the channels in your package together with the Sky+ features.

    Why not?

I thought the only channels paired to the box are the premium ones - Sports and Movies?

The OP seems to be saying his friend gave him a Sky HD box.

He then put his own Sky card from a different box into the box he was given and it worked ok.

How is this possible if he didn't ring Sky to pair it?

It's possible, because the card only needs to be paired in order to decrypt premium channels.

A valid Sky card will work in any Sky box, but will only decrypt premium channels in the box it is paired with.

a card must be paired for:

    sky movies,
    sky sports,
    recording,
    all HD channels,
(Extra channels, i.e porn, setanta, racing uk etc).

    what does work is:
    irish pack,
    entertainment,
    music,
    kids,
    etc
