Emergency tax and claiming it back - confused

I'm really confused by both the citizen's information and revenue websites.

I am going to be emergency taxed as I am having trouble securing my p45 from my last employer and my first payday in the new job is early next week. I will be emergency taxed as I haven't got this and although I know there is a number or code for every employer in the company that you can pass onto revenue I think I've left it too late to get this.

So my question is this ...how and when can I apply to get this emergency tax back?

Never too late to get the employer number.

Get it ASAP, ring revenue and give it to them.

Not 100% sure if the p45 is required but revenue will confirm.

Once revenue have you set up with the new employer code its up to the company then so be set up.

Should be sorted for next pay day (if paid monthly...I wouldn't bank on it if paid weekly/bi-monthly)

I can get the employer number over the weekend if needs be but I presume revenue are only taking calls from 9am on Monday. Payroll people in new job said that payment of wages will be processed on Monday. So am I right in saying I'm too late for this month anyway?

Regarding emergency tax you're saying that it will be given back to be in my next pay packet without me doing anything after calling revenue with this number?

Yea revenue is mon to fri.

and nope, you'll get the tax back in your next payslip or whichever payslip after everything is sorted. long as revenue have all the details and your company are somewhat competent!

Ring revenue and then check with payroll or whoever in your company and make sure they are on the ball. The p45 *might* hold up things but I don't know for certain; best to ask revenue.

(coming from someone who got E taxed on two payslips despite sending all the details to revenue AND the company as soon as i started in new job...turned out the company just ****ed up after I rang revenue and they confirmed they had sent my info out)

really annoyed at my past employer as they have brushed my requests for the p45 off. That would speed things up immensely. So first thing monday I'm going to ring revenue with that employer number, and after that ring my employer to say what?? 'Hi I've called revenue and have passed on your employer number so I hope not to get taxed up to my eyeballs?'

If this is the first time you're getting paid on this payroll, emergency tax will just mean that you only get one months credits, cut-off etc for that month. This effectively means as long as you have been working all year up to now, you will not be over or under-deducted tax.

The next thing to do is get the employer number for the new company you have started with and ring Revenue tomorrow to register yourself as an employee. They may have already received P45 details for you from your previous employer from ROS. If they haven't, they should be able to put you on a normal basis from 1 January. They will then receive your previous pay details when your previous company submits its P35 in 2013, you can then apply to have a balancing statement issued which will re-calculate your tax due for 2012. However, having been on emergency for one month only, I would doubt there will be any refund due, but do be careful applying for this as you could end up owing tax.

I hope this clarifies the matter for you.

When you ring the tax office tomorrow , have a copy of your final payslip from last employer with you , and tell them the year to date figures etc .

Ask them for a cumulative tax cert for 2013 , and cumulative USC .

Revenue won't take payslip details over the phone in the absence of a p45.
O/p phone Revenue, they will issue you with a week one cert to avoid emergency tax.

Actually on Emergency tax, you only get the PAYE tax credit, and not the personal tax credit (or else the other way around...but they're both the same amount) so if he's a single person, he'll only be getting half the tax credit he's entitled to, so it's probable that he will be overpaying tax.

OP if the payroll has been done today, then it is too late to change anything for this month. As this is the final month of the year, you cannot get tax back on your next payslip, you will need to contact Revenue directly in the new year and ask them to issue you with a P21 balancing statement.

Regarding your issue getting your P45, if this ever happens again, you can phone Revenue and ask them to move all your tax credits to your current employer (you will need the current employer's tax number).

I just started my first job this summer and have been emergency taxed. How do I go about claiming it back? I have no idea about P45 or whatever forms

If this is your very first job ever, then you do not exist on Revenues systems. You need to complete a Form 12A in order to register yourself and your employment with Revenue.
This will allow Revenue to issue a tax credit cert to your employer, which will allow them to tax you correctly. If you have been overtaxed, your employer will refund you in your wages once they start to operate from the tax credit cert.

The links below will explain more. Time for a bit of reading as everyone in PAYE employment should understand how they are taxed.
