    Smoke = carbon monoxide.

    Anything over 400 parts per million can cause death.
    Stove produces over 2500 pmm

    Ok if if all goes up the chimney.

    Do not use your stove again till it's professional fixed.

    You have seen the news and warnings on the TV. Deaths do happen.

    I dont like spinning cowls as they pull the heat up the chimney and can twist the throat plate.
    Did you have chimney cleaned before fitting.
    Did you check throat plate is put in right. Check manual.in most cases its down to dirty chimney or a throat plate put in wrong. If the chimney is lower than the pitch of the roof then get a h cowl.if it was in need of a h cowl then the best way to know is if it works well today and not tomorrow. The only thing that changes is the weather

    Do you not have a carbon monoxide alarm?

    Everyone who burns fuel in a house should buy themselves at least one alarm, could save your life and your family.

    You should first get the Chimney cleaned to be sure it's clean. You could have a Birds nest in it.
    I also remember when we moved into our newly built house, about 6 weeks after being lighting fires everyday. A huge piece of very hot Mortar fell down and rolled out onto our new Sitting room Carpet. It scorched and Burnt a Hole in it before we could pick it up. Luckily we were in the house at the time as I hate to think what might have happened.

    Chimney's seem simple but are actually very complex and sadly most Builders don't understand how important the physics involved are in size and air movement.

    Here is 2 good sites with plenty of information which might help you understand how they work.

    That link on drafting problems was a great help, cheers. My sitting room fireplace had started filling the room with smoke the last few days when i put the fire on. Realized after reading that, it was because last week i went overboard with the adhesive draft excluding strips that i put all around the two doors in the sitting room (one goes to the kitchen, the other to the front corridor which are both cold spots). I had even put tape over the keyholes, just made the room far too airtight. So ive now pulled the 20 quid worth of strips off and the draught is coming in again but at least he smoke is going up once again.

    Put a properly sized vent in the room. Don't be depending on air seeping in here and there to provide combustion air. ALWAYS have a CO alarm where you have a flame burning, though even an electric oven can cause CO.

    Please follow site and charter rules. "Resistance is futile"

    I do appreciate it, my gf fell asleep on the couch in that room and my dogs sleep in there too! At first i thought it was just the coal since i had the wrong coal delivered, upon inspecting the bag i found it was not smokeless as i ordered but some other sh!te. There was so much smoke i had to put the fire out and leave the window open all night. I got the bags exchanged but the problem continued even with smokeless until i unblocked the drafts. Then again maybe having the smoky coal delivered was fortunate as it alerted me to the problem considering we dont have an alarm. Anyway i'm not messin about any more, i think the problem is solved now but ill be picking up a new carbon monoxide alarm from argos tomorrow before we light the fire again.

    I am getting an alarm defo tomorrow, im renting so can't put a vent in but the alarm im getting has a display for monitoring the levels of carbon monoxide. If we cant keep it safe and warm at the same time I'll just stop lighting the fire and use the OFCH. I'm debating now whether to tell my gf i nearly killed us all with my idiotic 'war on drafts'. Think ill just tell her the draft strips fell off, must have been cheap crappy adhesive.
