Would think either would work fine. Which specific processor do you have in mind, Budget etc, some other poster would be able to advice better I guess.

Intel will run anything better. In the end It's budget that decides your choice. What is it.

Im not to sure on the AMD side as I haven't really researched them but I am looking at a i5 4570 but was thinking if I went AMD it would be much cheaper also I would be mostly gaming on my rig so would the AMD processor be on par with Intel for gaming?

Nope. Intel wins out unless the AMD chip is overclocked. Intel cores are stronger most games use only 2 cores. So them 2 Intel cores will beat out a six core AMD.

I5 4570 is a good start. If you have the budget. If not the AMD one suggested is a solid CPU.

A processor that is good for SolidWorks might not be good for gaming. Intel Xeon would be much better for SolidWorks and decent for gaming and i5 or i7 would be much better for gaming and decent for SolidWorks. An AMD processor in general wouldn't be as good for gaming or SolidWorks but would be cheaper.

It's going to be the same with graphics cards.

As gar mentioned the Xeon is a good CPU for both 220 price tag. It has I7 performance. You won't be losing either way you go really.

    Again what is your budget?
