Car hasn't been started for 10years+

    Hi All,

    Looking for some advice please. We have a Toyota KP30 which has been sat in the shed for a few years and sat in another for quite a few years before that. So it probably hasn't been started in at least 10 years.

    Is there any procedure we should follow to try starting it or just turn it over and see what happens? I don't really want to risk damaging it as we're told it was running before being stored by the previous owner.

    So far I have removed the petrol tank, drained it and am in the process of cleaning/sealing it. The radiator was also beyond repair so I have sourced a replacement one and intend to fit it over the Christmas holidays.

    what I would do

    ...first steps....

    check the oil see if there is any water in it....if not...

    ...take out plugs...

    drop of diesel or light oil in each cylinder and try to turn it over by putting a spanner on the nut holding the pulley to the crankshaft (assuming there is a nut on a Toyota, should be I reckon)....

    if it will trun, I'd keepturning it over for a while b hand to move some oil round before trrying putting in the plugs and fiiring it up


    (if it was a Ford it would almost certainly start.....)


    PS don't go do it yet, because I might be talking crap and someone else will come along who knows better...:-)

    Sound advice plus oil and filter,

    Plus turn it over with the ht lead disconnected til the oil light goes out before starting it.

    It start quicker than any old ford :D

    New points will be required too

    The lack of lubrication in the cylinders with a bit of condensation might have made things interesting in the cylinders, so a few places would recommend lubrication into the cylinders themselves.

    Take the sparkplugs out, put a little penetrating oil into the cylinders and leave for a day. Remove the rocker cover and see that the valves are moving correctly when turning over the engine by hand if you can, making sure that the engine has not seized. If a valve is not moving then there could be piston-valve contact if attempted to use the starter motor to turn it, and this would need to be fixed before trying to start it.

    If the engine appears free and the valves are all moving correctly, put the rocker cover back on and put new plugs in. Making sure that there is clean fuel coming to the engine, remove the air filter and try to start with some of the ez-start or carb cleaner sprayed into the intake. If the engine fires and runs, change the oil (contaminated with the penetrating oil) to a high-detergent oil, and change the filter. Run the engine for a few hundred miles, then change the oil and filter again for the proper oil for the engine.

    as you have the tank removed get a gallon can of 'mix' petrol with two stroke oil same as for a chainsaw and run it on this untill the engine warms up keeping the revs low.

    Would you guys not spin the engine with the plugs out, till the oil pressure light go's out? After checking engine is free etc, as advised in above posts? A lot easier on your battery than spinning with full compression.

    Iv a Datsun 100A that I swapped in an engine from a scrapped one that was idle 11 years. Fresh oil n filter, New plugs, squirt of oil down the bores and off she went.
    I changed the oil and filter again shortly afterwards, it's been running like a clock since.
    The Japs are good like that.
