Does three.ie actively detect tethering and block it?

Does three.ie actively block tethering? If so how do they detect it?

I am not a compulsive tetherer but occasionally I like to connect a laptop or tablet via my phone. Much more regularly I often set my phone browser to a desktop user agent so that I can see web pages as they were originally intended.

I asked a sales agent in a three shop about this and he said "Ah sure you'll be grand, we never check" but I have read reports of three actively blocking tethering in the UK so I would love to hear the opinion of someone who has actually tried tethering through three in Ireland.

A friend of mine from work has no broadband at all, just tethers from his phone and uses that for all his devices.

Frynge before making an investment that size I strongly recommend getting something in writing from a 3 agent. The standard terms on conditions on their website say tethering is not allowed http://ask3.three.ie/srvs/cgi-bin/webisapi.dll/,/?new,kb=ROIWebportal,ts=ROIWeb,t=CaseDoc.tem,case=obj%289304%29,varset_username=ROIWeb:ROIWebUser.

I assume this is to stop people abusing the "all you can eat" data allowance with torrents and streaming. I don't know why they don't just set a reasonable fair use limit and allow you to use that data any way you want.

AFAIR, tethering is allowed on business plans.

For personal use - 3 are not actively scanning/blocking but that's not to say they won't and if they catch you they'll have a case for breach of contract.
I'm not sure about 3 uk but it's probably the same.

Check the T&C for your plan.

I am in London and have been with 3 uk for 3 years. I pay an extra 5£ a month and have tethering. On their 'one plan' which is all you can eat data, a couple of thousand minutes and 5000 texts tethering is allowed at no extra cost with the package at 36£ aprox with an iphone 4 and about 40£ with an iphone 5.
I have received no information from them that it's gone. Where did you get your information?

(If Three ARE watching this thread...)

No, tethering is not permitted, and you're cruel and mean to even consider doing it. How could you!

(If Three ARE NOT watching this thread...)

It's said to be the case, only it is not actively enforced, but they hold the right to slow down your internet or the like if you're caught doing it. And that's on 3Pay, the Pay as you Go service. Go ahead, you'll be fine.

Even if it is not permitted officially, you'll be throwing a ton of money into the company every month, and they should be OK with you overall; it's not like you're a 15 year old boy streaming tons and tons of shoot-em-up video games and high definition pornography.

You'll be given a dedicated sales team member and customer care agent if you're going to sign up for 3's business plans, so the best thing is to be straight and honest with them and they'll guide you. They're based in St. Stephen's Green and are fairly easy going (They've allowed business plans for individuals, when they should have been for a number of users).

I'm sorry but Three are scanning and BLOCKING tethering. I should know I have just had my S4 phone's tethering function disabled. The tethering function on my wife's S3 phone still works though. Age of the contract is the reason for this as outlined by three. Not sure on the age of my wife's contract could still end up with that getting blocked. http://ask3.three.ie/srvs/cgi-bin/webisapi.dll/,/?new,kb=ROIWebportal,ts=ROIWeb,t=CaseDoc.tem,case=obj%289304%29,varset_username=ROIWeb:ROIWebUser
