Has anyone got advice on HID kits for BMW 520D F10 ?

    Best type/supplier?
    Fitting issues?
    Compatability issues with BMW electronics?

And while I'm at it, whats a reflector and a projector light?

What wattage will pass the NCT?

Is 4500k recommnded, I want the BMW xeon colour.

    Thanks

    R

You have projectors in an f10.

I have 4500k on my projector lights. Never had any problems with the NCT.

Don't fit them to reflector lights though, you'll blind oncoming traffic.

I fitted a set of Canbus H7's to my sons E46 recently.
    I used a 5000k kit.
    He was delighted with them,
    Everything went without a hitch.
All wiring/ballasts etc. fitted inside the headlamp unit so is also very neat and tidy.

I have also fittted 3 sets of them to my current and previous cars and never had a hitch with them.
I only buy the kits from here as the supply Metal based bulbs.

Thanks for the replies, very helpful.

My car is still under BMW main dealer warranty, will fitting these kits invalidate warranty?

And what about the infamous insurance question...

"does your can have any modifications?"

Does answering yes attract additional loading or refusal to insure?

    ^ No Idea.
I dont see it as a modification as such as it does not affect the performance of the car.
If in doubt, ask them first.

No, and in answer to your later question, you don't need to declare it to your insurer either (no more than you would if you changed an interior bulb colour)

    Basically plug and play
    Simple to do.
Just ensure your lamps are projectors or you will blind everyone.

Technically it will invalidate any warranty claims on the particular part that you carried out the mod to. Put it this way, if the car ever developed any electrical issues I'd be removing them before going back to BMW under warranty.

There's a guy on adverts from still organ who supplies and fits these for decent money. He does them there and then so if you are not 100% comfortable at doing it yourself you can see them going in, insure there's no errors and drive away all sorted.

You will have no errors with the canbus kit.

Will the "bulb out" warnings still operate on the BMW Computer?

Some canbus hides will not work with the bmw still, especially the newer cars it's hit and miss. That's why it's good to get them fitted and you can see yourself that it's ok.

My cousin went through 3 "canbus" kits on his E60 before he found one that worked.

    Yes.

Where did he get the kits from?

The one that ended up working was through adverts.ie
The first 2 sets were from some Irish site HIDIRL or something similar but have since disappeared. (No surprise considering their sh1t products).

One set from eBay that I got for him. Worked perfect but would flicker like crazy. Ended up getting a refund though as we paid through paypal.

I will try route out a link to the seller on adverts. €80 supplied and fitted IIRC.

    EDIT - this guy http://adverts.ie/655842

Have 6000k HIDs in my 04 civic the last two years , passed NCT no problem with them fitted , bought them from the lad mentioned by kceire , never had any problems with them either , no flickering or warning lights on dash

For €80 supplied and fitted is well worth it.
Provided they are metal based bulbs.

    Lads,

Can I get away with 55w Hids in projector lights (dipped beam)?

    or will they fail NCT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

Isn't there still going to be spill in halogen designed projector headlamps with HIDs? Since the actual shape of the light source is different (ie cylindrical for halogen and an arc for xenon)?

H7r bulbs help to reduce spill.

55w dims is a waste as when you use your brights they will be barely visible.

Will H7r fit ok where H7 was used?

    Yes.
That is what they were designed for,
    But as I stated.
The "R" stands for glrare reduction.
I have no idea how good these work as I never had to use them.
You may have to do a bit of Googling.

The H7R bulbs are supposedly designed for reflector headlamps. My experience with my wife's Audi A2 was a very scattered beam from the headlights. I checked the alignment with the local mechanic and he said they couldn't be aligned correctly and would fail the NCT. I swapped them out for a set of H7 Nightbreakers.

When it comes to aftermarket HID kits, use them only in projector headlamps or you'll blind oncoming traffic and most likely fail the NCT.

Was that the H7 or the H7R bulbs you tried?

As I stated, I have no experience with the "R" bulbs.

H7R. Also tried H7 in reflectors. While oncoming cars weren't flashing me, I wasn't happy that they were aligned correctly.
