Hi, I'd be very glad of any advice regarding the wii u. I made a bit of an impulse buy this morning as was offered a good "black friday" deal on the black 32 gb wii u, along with 2 games .....rabids and rayman. My kids have an old wii, and i'm hoping to give them the wii u for xmas, but I have a few questions. Will the 32gb pack contain everything needed to start playing? I know it comes with some kind of video gamepad, but I'm going to try to encourage my kids not to hold that when playing (to avoid breakages and also rows over whose turn it is to use it!!) so I was wondering if their old, basic, wii remotes will still work with wii u? (they weren't the wii motion sensitive ones)
Also, I had already gathered up a few wii games as stocking fillers. Namely Just Dance 2014, the cube, smurfs 2, epic mickey and rayman origins!! Would it be ok to still use these games on the wii u or should I return them? It seems the wii u games are more expensive, but perhaps I'd do better to give them fewer games but in wii u format? Looks like I have landed myself with 2 Rayman games now - anyone know if the older version or new wii u version is better? Perhaps with this standard of game it doesn't make much difference if the format is wii or wii u? Thanks in advance for any help ....I've a daughter who will turn 10 on Xmas Day so I'd better get it right as thats her lot then for the year !!

wii motes and wii games play on the wii u, you might want to look into getting motion plus attachments for wii u games, a lot of them will be requiring it.

Old Wii games play through the "vWii" mode - you launch the vWii from the WiiU main menu, then it's as if you're playing a Wii

Requires 1 Wiimote and 1 Sensor bar (which your WiiU may not have shipped with, but if you have a Wii you can use your old one. Or put 2 candles, one either side of your telly. But don't burn your telly!)

Wii Games work on the WiiU in vWii mode.
If, like many of the more nefarious Wii owners, your mate knobbled the Wii so it plays games from DVD-Rs or hard drive, those WON'T work on the WiiU
If you downloaded games onto your Wii from the Wii Shop, you need to transfer your account to the WiiU, which takes ages, requires an SD card and wipes the games off your original Wii in the process

If your TV does not have a HDMI input, you will need the TV cable from your Wii to plug it in.

    Edit:
    Regarding the original post -
1 grade A game beats 4 mediocre games every time
I have serious doubts that The Smurfs or The Cube are any good on any format :) But your kids might not know the difference. If they were expensive, I'd look at returning them. If they were cheap and your kids are young enough that the Look! SMURFS!!!! effect will overcome any shortcomings then hang on to them.
Worth bearing in mind, you can get full Access Passes to Wii Sports Tennis or Bowling (both downloads) for a tenner or 15 quid. IF they're anything like the Wii equivalents they'll be hilarious fun for kids of any age, and a source of many fights on stephen's day.

Rayman Legends contains many levels from Rayman Origins as unlockable extras. As such you might get more for your money keeping one and getting a different kind of game.

Depending where you got the games, I would look at returning them and seeing what you can get for your money.
For example, I got Just Dance 2014 WiiU for £13.99 last week. The WiiU version probably looks better than the Wii version and is probably better - I haven't played either yet so can't say for sure, but at the very least they should be the same, but with the Wii U version requiring less button clicks to launch! It's reduced online in a lot of places, but that's not necessarily filtering through to the highstreet....

Epic Mickey 2 WiiU is similarly cheap as chips online.

    Got the wii u yesterday.

There is a sensor bar with it. Old game controllers work perfect .

    Hi,

Looking at a Wii U for Mrs Boffin for Xmas.

I have been to 2 shops that sell them but got different answers from both.

    1. Will the wii fit that we use on the old Wii work with the new one?
    2. Will the remotes and games for the old wii work with the new one?

    All advice greatly appreciated.

I've just merged this with another thread with similar questions.

    1. Wii Fit from the old Wii will work with the Wii U, but only in virtual Wii mode. (There's a Wii option in the menu) There's a new version for the Wii U though, Wii Fit U, that will allow you to import the old Wii Fit data/saves and continue with them. It uses the same balance board, but some of the games in it require two Wii remotes with Motion Plus. You can even download a 30 day trial of it from the Wii U e-shop.

    2. The Wii remotes will work with most games, but as with the Wii Fit U, some will work fine with standard Wii remotes, some will require ones with Motion Plus. The games similarly, will work in vWii mode.

Worth noting on the new WiiU Fit, if you already own a balance board you can unlock the demo to give you full game functionality by purchasing the WiiFit Monitor from Amazon or the Nintendo shop (£19.99 last time I checked, so about €24 quid) rather than buying the full game in retail, which I believe costs squillions. I'm not sure if that offer is time limited or not though. Did anyone read the full press release?

That's exactly what I've done. It is basically a little pedometer/altimeter, and can be synced up with Wii Fit U to track your progress better.

Sad, but I actually enjoy seeing my little Mii jogging around Central Park / up the Eiffel Tower... :o

Thanks for the info folks. Explains the differences of answer in both shops.

Just to pick up on this point, the video gamepad is the main/default controller for the WiiU so they will need to use/hold it while playing.
