Is it all just a bit vindictive, a bit gutter press, a bit nosey.

For very serious crimes where the public might need to know who the psycho is, fair enough, but for petty stuff that was a moment of madness or drunkenness or stupidity do we need it.

They're going to pay their fine or do their community service for 48 hours or whatever for stealing some small item. Thats their punishment.

So why be a bastard and have all the local curtain-twitchers whispering with petty smugness about the teenager who got caught with a quarter ounce or some oul'one who was driving without a full licence.

Well I don't really care, but they can be comedy gold. Either the weird level of detail that's put in or the crime itself. Vaguely remember reading one about a man driving without insurance who abandoned the car and legged it from the gards, then in court claimed that he'd been a passenger and his friend was driving. Judge asked him who was this friend and he said oh you wouldn't know him, he lives in Australia now.

I'm glad they do, and that they print the outcomes of the cases. It's handy to have evidence to quote when someone is arguing that the judicial system in Ireland never does ridiculous things, like jailing someone for three months for not paying their TV license fines while letting mr knife-wielding iPhone thief with 45 previous convictions and a heroin habit off with a suspended sentence

Grabbing a woman's ass (or to be exact about it, sexual assault) is a crime of an altogether different league than the others, none of which involve assaulting a person.

If people who thought it was okay to grab people when they have the excuse of drink were named in the papers, then people wouldn't pass it off as a joke and there's probably be much less of it.

Seriously, people love this stuff, I think one part justification is the search for scandal around those who are holier than thou... chances are some of the shoplifters & no-insurance-drivers are utter hypocrites who would pretend they didn't get caught/prosecuted.

Not really. It would if you could show repeat offenders. That there's enough to fill a number of pages just shows we don't live in a country of a few thousand.

Often when recruiting staff a firm will Google them first to see if they have been convicted for anything. It came in useful for me once to avoid hiring a convicted sex offender.
