New Intercooler for Mk V Golf

    Hi all,

Yesterday one of the pipes going into the Intercooler on my VW Golf (MkV 2004 GT TDi) blew off. Whether a result of this event, or done previously, the intercooler housing is damaged, the plastic clips that connect the pipe to the unit are in bits and won't hold the pipe properly (It was reattached and failed again yesterday). The plastic clips etc (I've been told) are part of the Intercooler and can't be replaced individually.

So I need a whole new intercooler, the parts and work will cost over €500, gutting considering it's just such a tiny part. My non mechanic mind has compared this to replacing a wardrobe or something because a nut has lost it's tread.

At the moment the car is in to get this done (it won't go over 10kph at the moment), they probably won't have the part until next week, so I've some time to shop around and get some advice.

Any thoughts on alternatives here would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone else had this experience.

FYI, in case some people has joined the dots, I have another thread on my turbo, which I've been told is down to it lagging being nearly ten years old.

That seems steep, aftermarket intercoolers are pretty cheap, €100 or so.

You could go the route of getting the part yourself either from salvage, reconditioned or aftermarket then just pay a good indy mechanic 1-2 hours labour.

Get a 2nd hand one. I picked up my 04 a4 from garage today. Had the intercooler and top pipe into it replaced with salvage parts. Back break discs and pads replaced as well as a few other things all for €400
