I'm looking at some new clubs but nearly all of them go from 5i to SW. I would prefer 3i to 9i and allow myself 3 wedges then.

anyone know if this is possible or is 4i to PW the best that I can hope for

Anything is possible depending on the flexibility of the shop. I bought a new set of irons this time last year and went from 2i to PW and later added two additional wedges.
As said a lot of clubs (especially game improver irons) do now start at 5i which personally I think is a bit ridiculous (not a fan of hybrids) but you should be able to order the lower irons separately (not many manufactures still produce a 2 iron however). Kind of unusual to get a set also including a SW as most manufacturers realise people prefer to select their wedges with specif loft and bounce to suit their game/course.
What sort of irons are you looking at?
