Do I need a radon barrier?

    Hi all,
    I'm in the process of planning a refurb of the house, will start some time next year. It's at tender stage now, and one of the line items is the radon barrier (about 1k). Do I need this?

    What I was thinking instead was to checking the levels of radon first with one of these: https://www.rpii.ie/Measurement-Services/Radon-Measurement/Services/Apply-For-Measurement-Online.aspx

    If it's not an issue, then I will remove it from the list of jobs. Does that seem reasonable, or do I need it for some other reason (e.g. future proofing / building regs/ etc)?

    its part of the building regs dependant on where you live

    If you were building a new home I'd say yes defiantly. But as it's a refurb I don't see anything wrong in testing for the presence of radon and if it's no there now it's unlikely it will ever be.

    Thanks shanered. OK so looking at that map, we're looking at 1% - 5%.

    So those radon meters arrived today...takes 3 months.

    ... that's a good point fclauson. Does the radon barrier act as a damp course also?
