My nails are very strong and hard yet they break. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

They could be texture of the nail could appear strong, but they could be rigid and brittle.I think we are past the prevention stage, its now on to the cure..

If these are your own nails and not false nails i would worry and try to fix my diet,it doesnt seem that you are getting a lot of vitamins and protein, keratin is essential for the nails too.

Putting keratin on topically wont work despite what all the cosmetic companies say,the only vitamin that works that is put on topically is vitamin a (for the skin not nails)but even the results of that are limited.

You need to fix your diet, dont bother with the hardening nail varnishes,as nice as they are to use,and all..Listen i had that problem before nails were breaking and brittle,so i changed my diet and i saw the results within a couple of weeks - nails were no longer breaking or brittle.

What diet changes did you make. I do have a healthy diet but there is always room for improvement I guess.

You should eat keratin rich foods, and foods that assist in the production of keratin, vitamin c aids production of keratin, foods such as citrus fruits(oranges, clementines, mandarins etc),and foods such as brussel sprouts and peppers can help also.

Lean meats have lots of protein in them, animal kidney and liver, low fat dairy has a combination of amino acids that boost keratin production.

You should eat vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli and onions because they contain vitamin B7 and can improve the properties of keratin in the body.

Do this for a few weeks or at least for one or two weeks per month and notice the difference in your nails and hair too!

How often do you paint your nails? I find that my nails start to break if I don't leave long enough gaps between polishes.

About twice a month. I don't use a base coat.

Same, polish and remover are the main reason my nails break or split layers.

I think the gel polishes are much worse too, I had to wait months for my nails to recover, yet if left unpolished with a couple of applications of handcream a day, my nails are perfect.

I forgot to mention using nail polish and using it everyday without leaving adequate breaks of a couple of days, can contribute to nail breakage.

I would say leave off the nail varnish and removers for a few days if this is the problem. In my experience nail varnishes are the worst for weakening nails too..

If not stick to a diet about 2 weeks out of every month and notice some changes in your nails for the better!

I only polish my nails a couple of times a month and leave a break of about two weeks between polishing so it may not be the issue.

I would try two things,an overhaul of my diet and leave off the nail varnish just in case some people are more senstive to these harsh chemicals..

I notice after using nail varnish remover for example that my nails seem brittle and yellowing occurs too.

Thats why i give my nails a break,(seeming you give your nails break i would say it could be diet).
