    Hey guys,

My wife has a Canon 450D DSLR and I'd like to get her an automatic flash for Christmas. I bought her a non Canon branded flash last year and she's been getting on fine with it, it's the type where you have to manually set the power settings on it in order to get the correct amount of light to suit your photo...I know there is probably some tech term for this :)

I'd now like to get her a Canon flash where the settings from the camera are automatically sent to the flash so that no real settings have to made to the flash itself. For the vast majority of the time she will be using the camera indoors taking pics of the kids and family. I know there are various Canon flashes and versions out there, but could someone recommend one which would suit her needs?

For the most part we generally buy most of our electronics from pixmania, if you'd also like to recommend a shop or website then I'd appreciate that too :)

Thanks a million for the help.

I use Canon 600 ex-rt flashes. It's Canon's top of the range flash. I did a flash photography workshop with Neil van Nierkerk www.neilvn.com two years ago and he said if possible, buy the best flash available. But your wife is learning flash in the best possible way, in Manual. ETTL is great technology, but at times will let you down, in some situations. A good SEKONIC flash meter is a massive help, in situations you've described.

If your looking to buy a flash, try www.flashcamera.co.uk or www.keaphoto.com

Hope this is a help to you.....:)

That flash costs €600.00 I've one of them because I really really need the features how ever if your taking pictures of a person and you need a slight pop of a flash just to lift the shadows, you don't and can't offer the advice to bye the very best of equipment. That's unfair and put pressure on every one to have the very best of equipment.

One of these is more then adaquit. I recomend them I've bought the majority of my kit of them. Hope that helps.

And this is the very reason, I don't post in forums that often. I'd never put pressure on anyone to buy expensive equipment. This is why we all have choices.

The 600 ex-rt might cost €600 here in Ireland, but not in either of those online stores I've mentioned....

Thanks for the reply, I ordered the same flash from Harvey Norman yesterday and got it for €239, it was €299 in most other places I tried. I read some good comparison articles on the 430 vs 320, the 430 seemed like a slightly better all rounder flash. I'm sure she'll enjoy it :)
