I'm getting a new WII U for Xmas :). I'm wondering will I have to update it when I switch it on for the first time? If I do, how big is the download?

    Thanks

Yup! It's well over 1GB I think, it takes forever anyway! Best bet is to download it as soon as possible when purchased so it'll be ready once opened on xmas day. :)

If you have a Wii LAN adapter use that, makes downloading much faster, certainly does in my case anyway

It'll probably take up to 50 minutes.

Hi, after performing the update on the wii u, would an old version wii game look and play pretty much the same as a wii U version? I too have bought a wii U console as an xmas present, having picked up a good "black friday" bundle deal with a couple of wii U games. The thing is, I had already bought a few old version wii games in readyness for xmas. One was the Cube wii game....don't think it is even available on wii U...but as for the others ( just dance 2014, epic mickey and the smurfs)..will I just keep the version I bought, as they seem to be cheaper, or should i really change them to the wii U version for better graphics? Also, I've had a little bit of conflicting advice in shops lately regarding using the old wii remotes with wii U. We have the basic remotes without wii motion on them. Some people have said I can use them with the wii U, and others have told me no, only the old remotes with wii motion will work. Am worried the kids could end up at xmas with the console, the games, but no remotes...nightmare! Anyone know for sure? Thanks for any advice.

The old remotes will work with the console, however, some games may require the motion plus. For example, the Zelda game in Nintendoland needs it for multiplayer. The Mario Chase and Luigi Mansion games in Nintendoland just need regular wii motes. Same with New Super Mario Bros U.
