For someone who wants to get away from home and do something to help others can anyone suggest an activity for this day - such as helping the homeless - and where to do it? Thanks in advance

Your best bet would be to contact the organisations who engage with the people you'd like to help, eg. Simon Community in relation to homelessness. They should be able to point you in the right direction. Also if you have local dinner programmes run by smaller organisations they might be looking for volunteers on Christmas day.
