Toshiba laptop stuck in standby

I have a Toshiba laptop and whenever I shut it down, all lights go off then the standby light comes back on, and it runs down the battery.

Can anyone help me change my settings or something (sorry, I'm not very techie) so that when I shut it down it turns off and stays off, until I power it up again.

    Thx

Check Power Options in the Control Panel. Also, as a workaround, remove the battery. I have a laptop with I think a slightly dodgy power switch, sometimes it turns itself on in the middle of the night.
