Recommend a Car

    Hi,

I'm looking to buy a used car in January, I've decided to start having a look around now to get a feel for prices/availability etc. The only problem is I have no idea what car would best suit my needs!

I'm 24, I've been driving for 2/3 years but this is my first time buying a car so I'm not looking for anything too flashy. I have 4/5000 to spend and am hoping to get a car that would typically be considered bulletproof that will get me from a-b without causing me too much heartbreak.

I do slightly above average mileage with a bit of motorway/cross country driving so ideally I'd like a diesel but its not the end of the world if I get a petrol car. I don't care how old the car is but I would like the mileage to be as low as possible.

So far I have considered things like Focus tdci, Golf tdi, civic, corollas etc. If anyone could give me feedback on the car types I have mentioned or suggest another type of car that would fit my needs it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

How much is above average mileage? Your €5k will probably go further with buying a petrol car over a diesel one. Do you have any limitations on motor tax?

To be honest I hadn't put a figure on it just assumed I was doing above average. Had a check on google maps there and I'd probably only by doing 12-15,000 km a year. Would there not be more longevity associated with a diesel? I don't really mind getting a petrol at all if I can get one that will last me a few years. No major limitations on motor tax as long as it's not ridiculous

For 12-15k km per year that's petrol territory.
Unless you get an older diesel for peanuts of course.

Ok sounds good, like I said I'm not too hung up on what fuel type it is. Any suggestions on specific car types?

Some more info will be good. What will you be using it for. Do you have a family. Suggestion will likely differ if you are single vs have a young family.

I'll be using it for getting to and from work and other general use. I don't have a family and don't plan on having one any time soon. I don't need to be transporting anything around either so don't need anything massive.

Would a coupe or 3 door be good or do you prefer the extra versatility of a 4 dr or 5 dr?
