How do you play wii U with only one game pad?

Hi, I hope someone here will be able to help me! I've 2 daughters aged 10 and 11 who own a wii. They like playing all the disney and party games but wouldn't be big gamers, probably using the wii once or twice a week. I am considering getting them a wii U for Xmas, but am wondering if it is worth spending the money? They seem content with the wii, but I'm aware that there will be fewer and fewer games available for the old wii as time goes on. Probably my biggest issue with the wii U is the fact that there is only one game pad - does that not make it very difficult to fairly play 2 player games? I know precious little about gaming as you can probably tell...but I just have a dread of spending all that money for the console and then spending the next few months as a harrassed mother refereeing rows between my kids as to whose turn it is to use the game pad! There's probably a good reason why there is only one game pad but I can't figure it out so I'd be grateful for any advice..Can't figure out if it will be a great present for them or if we'll have war over it every week!!

Have you or Claus been specifically asked for the Wii U? If so, then go for it! If not, then I don't know.

I'd guess, although I don't really know, that there are plenty of games/multi-player games that can be played through normal controllers also.

You can use Wii controllers - WiiMotes, Wii Nunchucks, Wii Classic Controllers (the last 2 connect to the WiiMotes) as well as the Wii U Pro Controllers to add additional players. Where possible, keep the controller with the screen either in your hands or those of your least clumsy child - it's pretty much required for most games and bloody expensive to fix if the screen gets broken

While people will tell you the WiiU has a great line-up and great future, it's unlikely to get the same support in Retail as XBox and Playstation. It's worth getting, it's a great console, but be prepared for your kids possibly getting a bit of peer pressure about it over the next few years.

Thank you Banjo - I feel a bit better knowing that they don't HAVE to hold the game pad - might be fairer to keep it beside the tv and let them check it when they need to! You are right Mr. Tom, it would be so much easier for Santa if he had been asked for a Wii U. Unfortunately my kids have sent off their letters, both asking for.......a surprise!! Thank you both for taking the time out to reply.

Something some games might do is have one player use the gamepad and the other player use the tv, and have them face off against each other.
Not sure if anything does that yet that isn't zombiu though.
