Hi my brother is refusing to get out of bed and has done since Monday. He won't talk to anyone either. I've tried being nice and kind to him to try and get him to go to the doctor but my mother keeps shouting at him to snap out of it and that he's making everyone else in the house miserable. TBH not sure why I posted this I suppose yo just get it off my chest.

If your brother has not got out of bed since Monday, I would ask the doctor to make a house call.

I'd add that he won't just 'snap out of it' because his family want him to. Definitely get the GP out. The best you can do is to be available to him, but not intrusive. A difficult balance. You could also talk to his close friends to try to get some idea of what's been going on for him recently.

Sounds tough. Come back here for more chat. You might need it.

Well...
Things that don't work for this kind of thing...
Shouting "Cop on to yourself", "grow up!", or similar.
Guilt trips also suck.
Go and talk to him again?
What was going on before this?

He does get out of bed for a short while in the evenings to have something to eat and then he goes for a short walk to smoke cigarettes I guess.

I'm fully aware that my moms approach is completely wrong, I've tried explaining that to her but to no avail.

He'll only say a couple of words then he puts his head under the covers and won't say anymore.

As for what was going on before this I have no idea, he seemed in good form the previous week but fairly quiet Sunday, I just put that down to him being sick from drink.
I'll get onto a couple of his friends later and see what's up.

Sounds like hes suffering from some bad depression, its your mother who needs to "snap out of it" because that kind of reaction will 110% not help some one who is depressed. there simply is no just snapping out of it when you feel like that.

Like some one else said try talking to him again just the too of ye, let him know he can confide in you and you got his back no matter whats happening.

Could even be seasonal depression and might need light therapy or vitamin D dosage.

Folks,

Please be aware that online diagnosing by unqualified posters counts as "medical advice" and as such is in breach of the forum rules.

OP,

Your brother - and by extension yourself and your family need more help than can be offered by the posters of PI. Please talk to your own GP about what is going on with your brother and ask for their professional advice on how best to proceed.

All the very best.
