I have just painted my valve cover, and was wondering on how to get the paint off of the lettering without scratching the paint around the letters. and how would i get the letters shiny.

I know its too late for you, but for others, i cleaned my valve cover, then smeared a small bit of vaseline over the tops of the letters and painted away. WHen it was fully dry, i just rubbed the letters and the paint come off them and nowhere else.

Are the letters raised? If so, wet and dry paper wrapped around a sanding block will ensure that just the top surface is sanded.

Wet & Dry 1500 grit and a bit of patience should do a good job!
But you might want something a bit more aggressive at first, like 800 and finish with 1500.

Yeah got the heavy paint off with a stanley , used agressive 800 grit then worked down to 1500 :) very happy with the job :)

Hope no-one makes the same mistake as me when doing this , by prepping the work before-hand you'll save yourself hour(s) on a final finish
